Jo Leichte
I’ve had many jobs at BERNINA stores and at BERNINA of America, Inc., but my current title is Consumer Support Specialist, which means YOU determine what I do from day to day. That’s fine with me, as my favorite thing to do is talk about sewing. I love doing research, trying new sewing techniques, and writing and teaching about what I’ve learned. To paraphrase an old soda jingle, “I’d like to teach the world to sew.”
I started sewing so I could make clothes that were long enough, and garment sewing is still my favorite type of sewing. I just moved from a small apartment outside Chicago to a 1958 farmhouse in the mountains of NC, so currently I’m stitching curtains and slipcovers and other things for my home. I’m the product of generations of quilters, and started my first quilt in eighth grade…and finally finished it the summer before I went to college. Since then I’ve made a couple more full size quilts and many small ones, nearly all of which I’ve given away. My favorite quilt is one I made with my biological, adopted, and foster nieces and nephews when they were 7-12 years old – they each made their own log cabin blocks, and together we appliquéd their handprints.
