Favorite Feature Contest - Spring 2010
March 10, 2010
Sewing machines are a bit like cars - not only are they both useful machines, but they're both constantly being updated with new features. Think about cars from the 1950s - automatic transmission had just been introduced, and air-conditioning was available only in a few models. 60 years later we have airbags, keyless entry, hybrid engines, even GPS systems that talk! The history of sewing machines runs a similar course. In the 1950s zigzag stitches, automatic buttonholes, and a free arm were relatively new features. All of these were part of the BERNINA 530 model shown here. Nearly 60 years later, sewing machines like the BERNINA artistas have touch screens, built in consultants and tutorials, more stitches than anyone in 1954 could imagine, controls for manipulating those stitches, and even a device that reads the movement of the fabric to improve your freemotion stitching!
If you've taken a peek at the BERNINA 8 Series machines - the 820 and 830 - you know that the designers and engineers included every feature a seamster could dream of having. BERNINA collected feature requests for years and years, then incorporated all that information in the design of the 8 Series machines. Okay, they didn't include the espresso machine I asked for, but other than that I can't think of anything they missed. There's even an alarm clock to remind me when it's time to feed my dog! If you haven't seen the 8 Series machines, you can take one for a virtual tour by downloading the BERNINA 820 and 830 Simulators from the 8 Series website. Just look at all those buttons! One for securing seams, one for presser foot pressure, one that remembers all the stitches you've been using, one for stitching in 16 directions 720 directions in half degree increments (what was I thinking!), one for adjusting tension,... there's even one for setting up your screen exactly the way you want it!

But the contest isn't about the old 530 or the new 8 Series machines - it's about sewing machine features. Which feature on your sewing machine do you absolutely love? If you could design your own machine, what feature would you be sure to include? I learned to sew on a straight stitch machine, and later sewed on a machine that had a extra stitches for techniques like blindhemming and overcasting, but no decorative stitches. So when I bought my first machine, one of the features I really wanted was a feather stitch. That was a long time ago - before I knew about BERNINA's Free Hand System. Now I can't live without having that FHS lever for raising and lowering the presser foot without using my hands!
So tell us what your favorite sewing machine feature is, or think of something new and exciting that you'd like to have on your machine. To enter the contest, just leave a comment to this blog posting before midnight EST, April 11, 2010. The winner gets a box of fun stuff from BERNINA, OESD, Benartex, and Brewer!

For me, the ability to adjust the pressure of the presser foot is an indispensable feature. I've sewn on machines that don't allow you to make this adjustment, and when I sew on certain knits or delicate fabrics I will have to switch to another machine that has this feature. I've had numerous problems -- from the feed dogs making white marks on taffeta, or even chewing holes in fine fabrics, to knits going wavy. Lightening up the pressure of the presser foot reduces or solves these problems. The ability to adjust the pressure of the presser foot makes any sewing machine infinitely more functional.
There are so many but it is a toss up between the free hand system and needle down feature. Love them both and would not like to be without either.
I love the foot pedal the best. When ever I sew on a machine that does not allow me to walk the stitches I feel crippled. I also use the hands free device along with the foot pedal. I am also more of a button person so I love the buttons on the 440. I could afford a fancier machine, but I do not enjoy drilling down through the touch screen. (been there done that) I would never use a cutter except for embroidery so the lack of one on this machine does not bother me. I can tell when the bobbin is running out of thread by the noise so I don't miss that either. I would love more light though and a longer harp as is on the 820 but also can't do without the 5mm feed dogs. Thats it.
My favorite feature is the built in walking foot/dual feet foot. I wouldn't want to live without this awesome feature.
The one thing that I really miss on my 430 is auto cutter. This is a feature on MANY other brands before TOL lots of $$$.
Thanks- Corinne
(garment sewing)
My favorite feature has to be the FHS — I even reach for it unconsciously when I'm using my featherweight! But I also love the feet for my Bernina. Each one is engineered to do its job precisely and beautifully.
My favorite feature is the ability to press one button and have the machine secure the stitches and cut the threads.

I just received the Bernina 830E as a birthday present (Yes, I have the BEST husband in the world). WOW. The directional stitching feature is astounding. It's so easy to thread, and the menus are sufficiently intuitive that I can use it without having to read the manual.
My favorite features are adjustable presser foot pressure, essential for feeding both very lightweight and very heavy fabrics and seams, and narrow feet for better maneuverability. I also prefer a rather uncomplicated interface rather than an interface that is rather more like programming a computer. Simple levers and dials are quick and intuitive.
*Any* machine I ever buy has to have long basting. I discovered it on my first "21st century" machine a Singer Athena 2000. What that machine did NOT have, which I discovered was important to me in the late 70s-early 80s was drop feed. Luckily, the Bernina 930 had all of that when I purchased my first Bernina in the early 80s. Took me a while to get used to the FHS (a day or too ;-), but that is now a must also.
Only one favorite feature that I can't live without it? Bernina has many features that other brands don't have that I absolutely need.
Let's see. There is infinitely variable stitch width and length on all stitches. I have to have that. I absolutely need a separate button for needle position in order to get any stitch into exactly the right position.
There's more, but the contest says one. So I will stop.
The freehsnd system, hands down (LOL) is my favorite. Second would be the BSR.
I couldn't live without the needle up/down control on the foot pedal.
You know that space at the top left corner of the machine that is flat, I wish for a built in pin cushion. I know I could make one but it would be so much better and snazzier if it were part of the machine.
There are 2 features on my Artista 170 that I absolutely love, they are:- the simplicity of the reverse button and the ability to put stitches and lettering into memory.
I also am the proud owner of a 32 year old Bernina 830 Record, which is truly wonderful. The stitch quality is just so fantastic, and it is so easy to create free machine embroidery designs too. Totally dependable.
I love that one can finally override factory settings to default to the stitch setting/length/width most often used by the individual.
But I would REALLY like it if my midline Bernina had a low bobbin sensor. Perhaps a quilter doing long strips can make up for running out of thread, but when doing buttonholes on a lovely garment, topstitching for that finishing detail, it is really disruptive. Other manufacturers include it on non-TOL machines, surely Bernina has the technology to do so as well. A simple feature but one which would make a BIG difference between the choice to use this machine or another for superior results.
Just reading the title, I already knew the favorite feature! Mind you I've loved all my Bernina machines since my first--the 930, but the free-hand-system is my favorite. I've noticed a definite "knee-jerk" when sewing on any other machine. Now I have the 830 & love the new dual feed, but through the years that free-hand-system has been a real convenience, no a necessity for me. Thanks Bernina!
the big bobbin case is wonderful..now find a way to update the magic box so we can use our design cards
For starters, I have owned my 1080 Bernina for a long time and love it! It would be absolutely perfect if it had an alphabet. Would I use the alpha? Don't know. But the feature that I use and must have if the needle down.
I'm all about a basic, solid machine and my favorite of my little herd of machines is a 1961 singer so perhaps I'm not your target audience but for me the #1 feature I love is dependability, followed close on by dependability.
With that said, I'm also a total sucker for a good looking machine. I'd love to have one that had different cases, or skins, to match my decor. White is nice but how much more fun to sew on a bright sage machine!
I'd also love a machine that could somehow convert the feed dogs so you could have the multiple feed for long straight sections or wide decorative stitches but then, with a push of a button, have the outer feed dogs drop down and the needle hole contracts for precision straight sewing. I have the hardest time sewing small curves on a wide feed dog machine but can do anything with an old straight stitch one.
Thanks for asking!!
I have the 830 and love it. It sews in any direction, not just 16. There are just too many features and all are favorites. I love the FHS and BSR. The ? button has been a big help in learning about each stitch, since I do not have to get out the manual to find out how best to use each stitch.
Oops! What was I thinking?! The artista 730 sews in 16 directions. The BERNINA 830 sews in 720 directions! That's not a typo - 720 directions, in half degree increments. Thanks for putting me straight! Jo
I would love for my sewing machine to have the ability to be able to import or download new stitches, while being able to keep the stitches I already have on my sewing machine....much like we do with our embroidery designs. It would even be fun to create my very own stitches, too!
The feature I use most, and the one I would never give up is the even feed foot. I use it for all my patchwork and garment seaming. If I were to change it at all it would be to have a true quarter inch, with the needle all the way to the right side, to act as a seam guide. I drive a 440ee but would love to have the even feed feature built in as it is on the 830.
I love everything about my Bernina machines (3)!
But if I have to name a feature, then I am pretty sure it is the FHS. The FHS makes it possible to zip along and turn corners with ease. It is just like the "power steering" on my car--I would not buy a machine without it.
Having a Bernina also means dependability- knowing I have invested in a machine that will give years and years of great service.
The feature I love most on my Bernina is the small mark on the stitch plate that marks the 1/4 inch. That little mark, along with the 1/4 inch foot, guarantees a perfect 1/4 inch seam every time and I feel like it is my little secret! I have singers and Juki machines and my Bernina is the only one with this feature. Priceless!
I love machine applique with the FHS. This makes it so easy for me to have my work look perfect. I love my Bernina 630E but would love the 830.
I agree with everyone - the free hand system, the heel on the foot pedal half stitch, - I love it all.
But where oh where is my bobbinless machine? There must be some way of threading from a full spool into that bottom area! Sergers can do it, why can't sewing machines do it? Think of the possibilities - endless embroidery, endless machine quilting, satin stitch without fear.
PS...couldn't live without my teflon foot. But maybe you could make the foot part harder (less likely to groove up) or make the teflon part replacable so that I wouldn't have to buy a whole new foot when the teflon wears out? It could snap on...hey, why couldn't it snap onto a #1????
And the stylus...a nice add on, but mine falls off the machine all the time and gets in the way. Take an idea from the smartphone industry. Grab your phone...look at the stylus...notice how it NEATLY tucks into the hole - out of the way when not needed, but safely and conveniently available when you do need it. Would it take much to just have a little hole area at the top area of the machine where the stylus could be stored? I'm sure that lots of people don't use the stylus, but I'd bet that's because it's never handy....
Next thought, "wireless" foot pedal. Maybe it could be a USB Foot Pedal (in case the batteries died or someone has issues with their foot pedal and needs to continue to sew while waiting for someone to help pair the foot pedal (maybe a bluetooth pedal). You wouldn't believe how much trouble that cord for the foot pedal is. Unless you have a custom table the cord needs to wrap around the front edge of the table, then it gets in the way of the FHS. YUCKY YUCKY. We're 21 century crafters...trust us to bluetooth our foot pedal (but don't forget that corded option for emergencies...). Maybe my pedal could even USB recharge? Wouldn't that be cool?
Also...please don't make me take my machine in for "firmware updates". I'm a grown up...I can apply a firmware update myself. Maybe the dealer could be paid to apply it, if you wanted, but for advanced users, we could do our own firmware updates. I live far from the dealer. I do take my machine in for annual cleaning...but please, let me do what I can do myself.
Love, love, love all my Bernina's - but my favorite is my new 830. The feature that I find most indispensable though is the free-hand system. My BSR is a close second runner up - especially on my 830 when the feed dogs drop automatically when I plug it in - wow!
I love the needle up and down. As a quilter, I would love to have a button to push that would raise the pressure foot just a smidge when I am chain-piecing after I stop to start another set of fabrics. When I am finished piecing, I can turn it off. (I know it's called the FHS.)
I love the hands free lever as well! I'm not sure how I ever lived without it before, but it's been indispensable when working on projects that I just can't take my hands off.
My favorite features on the 830 are the ability to bring any stitch on the machine into embroidery. I also love endless embroidery. Finally, I love the ability to drag and drop stitches in both the sewing and embroidery modes.
I find that the automatic threader is the most wonderful idea! Could not go without it now that I have had it!
I can't live without the "heel tap" foot control which will raise or lower the needle with a touch of the user's heel. I use this constantly, saves tons of time! Also, all the little thread cutters so conveniently placed on the machine. Finally, the adjustable foot pressure is a MUST. Thanks for the chance to win!
I have to agree with many others, the FHS is the best! Whenever I sew on a different machine, it is the one feature that I truly miss. I can "get along" on other machines without the needle down feature or the feed dog features, etc but I do miss the FHS.
My dream machine would have all the things necessary for garment sewing. I feel like we garment sewers are never considered. So with that in mind, my perfect machine would have adjustable presser foot pressure. Perfect straight stitch, even with thicker thread for topstitching. Perfect straight stitch that is the same on both sides. Long basting stitch. Adjustable needle positions, fantastic buttonholes even on uneven or tweed fabric. Setting needle up/down, faster speed when I need it. Stretch stitches. Utility stitches a stretch stitch that you can actually rip out if necessary. Built in even feed that is easy to turn off. Being able to use my foot pedal for moving the needle up or down. A stitch that actually stops right away and doesn't take another stitch when backstitching.
The feature I love the most is the machine threader. With my eyesight not being what it use to be, having the machine place the thread through the eye of the needle is wonderful!
I absolutely love the needle down feature. I am so used to having it that if I by chance use another machine I always reach for it and can't believe it's not there.
I have a 440 and I love the needle up/down, my walking foot and all the feet that came with my machines because they are sturdy and well made. I would love my machine more if it had a USB or card instead of having to hook up my computer to my 440 if ever have to add the embrodiery module to it and I would like as many classes I need until I felt comfortable and maybe a refresher class or two. Everyone doesn't learn at the same pace. More feet or thread to be added with purchase. I love the machine but I would like more goodies added to the package.
For me, it's a tie between the changeable needle position and the FHS.
I have many favorite features on my Bernina 730, but I think my most favorite is the needle up-needle down with a tap of your heel on the foot control. I normally sew with the machine set to always stop with the needle down, but it is great to be able to change that with a tap of my heel when I want to. GREAT feature!
i can not sew without the FHS but what i would love to see changed in the Ver 6 Artista DP Software is a way to manually place the osition of the alignment marks for the multi-hooping feature. another thing i would like to see is a sort of the built-in designs that are on the machine for an easier way to find a design you would like to use. now that i have found how easy it is and how great the built in stitches are i want more! they are great to add to embroidery that is done with the hoop! my biggest wish is to be the owner of an 830 - the features you have added are an answer to most all of my wishes!
No matter what sewing machine I use, the feature that I use most...without a doubt...is the needle down feature. There are MANY other features that are reasons that I chose Bernina machines but the one used for every aspect of my sewing is that wonderful needle down feature. Thanks, Bernina!
My favorite feature is the needle down position. So handy!!! Really, I love my Aurora 440, but the one thing I wish it had was a bobbin indicator or warning to tell me when it's close to empty. That would be the ultimate! :)
I have an almost 30 year old Bernina 817 that I still love, but I could SO use more light! I posted about your giveaway here http://sewingbusiness.com/2010/03/11/bernina-favorite-feature-contest.aspx Thanks!
I love the BSR. I was never good at free motion quilting and this BSR solves my problem!
I love all the stitches and the thread cutter on my singer machine. As fortrying out one of the Bernina artistas,I Love the fact that every stit, the fabric seems like it just gets through the machine like butter, and its alot faster than my machine too.
I love the perfect stitch...everytime. It just amazes me. I also love the foot pedal with the needle up/down option. I would be lost without it. My favorite attachment is the walking foot. My biggest dream feature would be extended arm space for machine quilting.
There are many things that I love about my 640, however, one of my favorite features is the automatic tension. I never have to fiddle with the tension.
The dual feed!!!!!!
I have several features that I couldn't live without: needle up/down; presser foot positions allowing hovering and automatically lowering when sewing; auto securing; start/stop button; speed control. Oh, there are "sew" many function my 830 has that I'm spoiled forever with all the features I enjoy. The versatility of the decorative stitches with pattern extend and combinations.
First off, I love all of my Berninas; started with the 1080 then got the 1630 and lastly the 180 I love, love, love the fact that I can move my needle position, it works wonders when putting in zippers or doing the blanket stitch. It's right up there with the FHS.
I have 4 different Berninas and I would have to say the best feature on all is the ease of use.
I love how smoothly my Bernina machines sew, and the beautiful, even stitches they all produce. I can't live without the needle-down feature, and the knee-lift is extremely helpful. The feet - all so sturdy and purposeful, well made and solid! And the embroidery module! I didn't even know how much I loved embroidery until I got my 630E!
If there was one thing I could add... It would be a feature where I could save my sewing preferences. For example, if I'm making jeans, have a set of 'saved stitches' that would include the longer straight stitch I use for topstitching, and my reinforcing zig-zag tackdown stitch. I'd be able to save these together in a little group for a specific project, like you would save files in a computer folder. And of course I'd be able to name the 'saved stitches' to remember what they are for!
Also, I'd love to be able to create my own decorative stitches that stitch out just like the built-in decorative stitches, without having to use the embroidery unit.
Hi Kathy - I have good news for you - your artista 630E DOES have a feature where you can store your favorite stitches with your favorite settings! It's called a Personal Program, and you access it by selecting the little smiling heart on your activa screen. I like it for saving decorative stitches I've manipulated for crazy patch - I can save several versions of my favorite feather stitch, all different lengths and widths. I can save other settings with each stitch: needle position, mirror image, pattern extend, balance and pattern repeat. Check out pages 84-86 in the 630 manual for instructions on saving your favorite stitches in Personal Program. I know you'll have fun playing with stitches you customize and save! Jo
The one thing I couldn't live without?
The FHS! Oh, how it brings me joy.
What would I love to see? Bigger bobbins on all machines with removeable CB hooks for proper cleaning out. Lighting along the harp of all machines- the same CFL on my Aurora 440's (there are two!!)
Adjustable presser foot pressure on all machines- as standard.
And most of all, most importantly, a straight stitch only machine with Bernina perfection, built on the 8 series chassis for around half the price of the 820. With industrial strength, speed and durability. Toss on dual feed and massive bobbin capacity and I'd sell my first born child. Add the ability to attach all the feet that straight stitch function with.
If that's not enough- lol- why not make a bright red, or bright cobalt blue sewing machine- or better yet allow us to pre-order what colour machine we would like? Even allow us to upload jpeg artwork for decoration on the machine's body- truly a custom machine. No-one on earth does this but they should -so we can have machines as unique as our sewn creations.
First I'd love to say that I am delighted to see Bernina get customer feedback for their product development. This shows your commitment to listening to the marketplace and to your loyal customers so you can be innovative and development/deliver the technology and tools we crave.
I'd love to see the following in the Bernina product. I own both an Series 830 & 730 and I am having a ball creating with them. What would even improve on these top of the line machines would be to incorporate the following functionality:
1. A simplified (1-3 steps) or even better yet a wizard, that automatically activates when the embroidery module is attached.
a. after attaching the embroidery hoop, the Bernina sewing computer would automatically recognize the hoop you've attached to the embroidery arm so you don't have to select the hoop. You could however, select another size hoop if you so desired.
b. Afer the hoop is attached, an you've imported a motif(s) or Bernina stitch(es) a wizard would activate that would lead you through a series of most likely scenarios:
** Endless Embroidery - ask you if you want to put the motif into endless embroidery. While the current 830 has the endless embroidery function, it could be simplified to reduce the number of steps and to make it fool proof.
** Resize the design motif(s) either automatically to fit the attached hoop or allow you to select from the most common proportion that best suits the motif (number of stitches, angles, density etc) and attached hoop. Leverage more of the Artista 6 sofware functionality in the sewing machine.
** Have the wizard show the common motif options such as creating fabric with the embroidery motif. This could be creating rows that are equi-distant apart, vertical, horizontal and the various angles such as 45 degrees, 60, 30, etc. Maybe put in a wizard step that allows you to select the number of rows, angle, distance apart, etc.
** A wizard that would allow you to create a circle/wreath, geometric objects such as triangles, hearts, octagons, rectangles etc from the motif.
** A wizard that allows you to put your design motif on point in a very easy step. Could be when you import the design into the embrodiery field the wizard asks you if you want to set the motif on center or on point or scattered. Sewing the registration marks for desings whether they be set on center, onpoint or in a circe would be ideal. Turning off the registration marks if you desire would be a nice to have too.
** For scattered designs the wizaed could determine how many you motifs you want in the hoop, then resize them base on a few variables such as same size, to scale for the hoop selected or random pattern placement.
As you can tell I like the wizard approach as even though I am a proficient software user, I find that i spend a great deal of time playing with the embroidery motifs when at my machine (and even when I use the Artista 6 sofware), so reducing the amount of time I have to spend editing the design for the hoop I am working in would be a god send. I enjoy the creative process, yet I also want to have a sense of accomplishment in sewing out my designs and ideas.
Thank you for caring enough to listen and to innovate. I love creating with my Berninas....... keep up the great work and never stop innovating !

I love EVERYTHING about the 440 QE - the feet, the BSR, the size of the bobbin, how solid the machine feels...If I had to choose the feature I like best, it would be the hands-free system, which includes both the knee-lift and the presser foot control for needle up/down. Brilliant!
I love everything about my Berninas, but my greatest love is the FHS, especially the foot pedal. In fact this whole system makes it so much fun to sew!
I'm a new Bernina owner and just bought my 630E a few weeks ago after owning Janomes for years. I've wanted a Bernina forever and am so excited to finally have my dream machine!! One of my favorite features is the buttonhole feature where you hold your actual button to the screen and turn the knob until the button on the screen is the same size as your actual button. Genius!! I do miss having a low bobbin warning feature.
Sew many features to choose from- how can we pick just one. FHS without a doubt is most used, needle position, foot pedal, secure/scissor button, great lighting on the 830, DF system and wonderful Stitches, the list goes on.
As I read the comments about features, the thread that continues thru so many posts is the fact that we tend to buy Bernina machines again and again (and keep the older versions). Why??? It has to be the dependability and quality construction of these machines.
Quality, Dependability, Durability. That's what keeps me with Bernina. I know that what I buy today to use on my machines will last and work. I want to sew, not spend my time looking for a replacement machine every few years.
Keep up the great work Bernina.
Now, if we could get a great Iron that works as well.
One more thought on what would be great.
How about making all the embroidery hoops with the same type of system as the Jumbo Hoop.
That knob is sooo much easier to use than the little screw on the other hoops.
Now, that would make embroidering a breeze.
I am a beginner sewer, so I probably don't use all the features I could, but the FHS is amazing. So much easier that having to let go of the fabric to hit a button, and I agree the down needle option is very helpful. My other favorite function is how easy it is to adjust the tension on the thread and feet. Keep it up! I love my Bernina!
There are so many wonderful features on my Bernina machines; I love that I can drop the feed dogs with the touch of a button; I love, love, love and couldn't live without the FHS; but I bought my new 630 for the stop/start button. I have had major foot surgery and can't use the foot pedal for long periods of time. Seams and hems, especially on home dec projects, were making it impossible for me to enjoy sewing. the little blue button, coupled with the motor speed control have been my life savers that enables me to keep sewing without pain.
My fave features are as follows although not in any particular order:
The feet! They don't wobble or move around like snap on feet.
The needle up/down via the foot pedal! I don't have to take my hands off my work to make the needle go up or down. This is particularly useful for garment sewing.
The CB oscillating hook! The narrower feed dogs make garment sewing much easier & more precise (especially heirloom with all that lace & batiste).
The vertical bobbin! Best for any kind of sewing IMHO because it doesn't jam or get weird tension problems.
The smooth, STABLE and quiet operation while sewing, especially on my older Bernies because the outer shells are made of metal.
Excellent bar none for quality construction and reliability! Need I say more?
The deco stitches on my 185 and 630 stitch out beautifully and yes I do actually use a lot of them! I would love to see more heirloom stitches & more delicate deco stitches. I rarely use the dense satiny stitches.
I have 6 Berninas & love them all for their different features: 140, 185, 930, 1230, 630, 240. My first "real" sewing machine was the 1230 & is probably still my favorite.
There really are so many features that I love. But I think my favorite is the foot pedal. I love being able to move it half a stitch. I've been sewing a bit on my girlfriend's machine, trying to teach her to sew, and it doesn't have that foot pedal feature, and I try to use it all the time. I'm a Bernina girl for life.
On all Bernina's, I have loved the Free Hand System! I have about fallen out of my sewing chair when it's not there and tried to use it! Now that I have the new 830, my next two fav features are the BSR and the auto presser-foot lowering when starting to stitch!
I have a 1230 and I think the feature I would miss the most would be free hand system, such a time saver! A close 2nd would be the needle down feature. Thsnks for asking!
I really love the needle down position, it's the first thing I push once I start sewing. The accurate 1/4 inch marking can't be beat and I couldn't live without the walking foot.
My favorite feature, which neither of my Bernina's have, is a self-winding bobbin. Where you put the bobbin in, shut the door, and it press on the pedal and the bobbin fills up, no special machine threading, and it's ready to sew. Even though my Bernie's don't have this feature, I'll still never give them up.
I love everything about my QE440. The best part is the BSR that is absolutely to die for. I do a lot of quilting and this is the easiest way to do it.
If I could have a Bernina, all features would be my favorite. I love self wind bobbins, embroidery stitches and needle down among several other features I wouldn't want to live without, although I do.
The FHS is at the top of the list. The needle down is also high on the list. But most of all the stitch quality is "fantastic", I can sew everything from heirloom lace to heavy denium and the stitches are perfect everytime.
Now that I've had my 830 for a year, I could never again imagine sewing without the Bernina dual feed! Hands down, that's my favorite. But right up there with it is the wonderful Bernina foot pedal, the knee lift system, and the hover foot feature.
What's missing? I would kill for the ability to be able to create my own stitches from scratch.
But what do I love best of all about my Bernina's? The design team over in Switzerland! They are the BEST! They listen, they incorporate, they are truly the best example of customer service in the industry.
My favorite feature is the BSR which allows for complete control of my stitches. I get goosebumps just thinking about my 440 QE. I think I would like to see an automatic thread cutter incorporated into this machine which would make it complete, for me.
My favorite foot is #24 for free motion quilting - no other free motion foot gives you so much control but somehow disappears from sight. My knee control is used daily and sorely missed when I use other machines without it.
My favorite part of any machine is the needle threader, as one gets older it is so hard to see the needle hole.
The FHS is my favorite feature, followed closely by the needle up/needle down function. I also adore the personal program for saving my favorite stitches. I hate to reinvent the wheel each time I repeat a sewing process. I'm a "senior sewist," so the magnifying lens set has become a great tool for free-motion stitching, buttonhole applique, and other precise work. Favorite feet - BSR, #10, #57. What I could do without: bobbin sensor - turned it off months ago. What would make me drool? On-screen clock so I don't forget to make dinner!
I'd have to say that the one feature that has helped me improve the quality of my sewing is the "cruise control" or speed setting feature. I do so much when the machine is set to sew slowly -- topstitching, collars, curves. For my money, that is the most valuable. (Next would be the automatic needle threader). Both features that make sewing so much more satisfying.
I like the FHS and needle down facility; these I could not live without now. I would like to be able to download new stitches into the machine. I would also love my 630 to have an empty bobbin sensor and thread cutter. Also the ability for bobbins to refill automatically whilst you are sewing; someone told me there are commercial machines that can do this. Adjustable feet on the bottom of the machine would really help for getting it level in a cabinet. Oh, and if you could invent a sewing machine that could do the housework and cook the dinner allowing me more time to sew I would buy it tomorrow!
What I do not like: the accessory storage box because almost everyone I know with a Bernina has had the doors fall off - it needs to more robust.
There are too many features to list that I couldn't live without... but the one thing I appreciate that many machines seem to be missing is being able to backstitch without any extra forward stitches.
There are so many things I like about my vintage Bernina 801 and Artista 180 it is hard to choose just one. I love how sturdy the feet are. The adjustable foot pressure is also great. I like how both machines sew through anything like sewing through butter. I think the best feature is the needle up/down with the heel tap on the foot pedal. A lot of the machines made today have too much plastic and too many fancy stitches. I would like to see a machine geared more to the garment sewer.
I depend on my Bernina for all of my free motion quilting. It is the only machine I have ever owned that free motions flawlessly with such beautiful tension on the top and bottom sides of my quilts. What makes the quilting so much nicer is the Needle Up/Down feature. Each time I stop & start during quilting, which is a lot, the needle stays down and keeps the quilt in position. By far, the Needle Up/Down is the best feature for me!

I Love my 440QE. I love the FHS, the needle up/down, and all the specialized feet that make my projects look great! But my favorite "feature" is the terrific service my dealer provides - especially classes once a month that teach me all the neat stuff my machine can do, along with new techniques. These inspire me to go home and create!
One favorite? Hands down it's needle down.
My favorite feature by far is the automatic needle threader. There would be a tie for second which would be the needle up/down feature and the motor speed feature.
I wish I had the "eco" button on my 630 and 730, like on my 180. I use that all the time. Can't live w/out the FHS and needle down and the fabulous feet. They are wonderful, just wish they weren't so pricey. Also, I wish they would offer the Bernina Club, emb club as an online feature. Most of us work and never get to take advantage of that wonderful feature the dealer offers. I learned so much in those classes when I took them. Put a bug in the powers that be, please.
hilary
My favorite feature would be the BSR. I love learning to quilt with the BSR, it makes the process of free motion quilting easier. I really love everything about my Bernina 440 QE.
I love my Bernina machines, I have three,910, 1630, 440QE. I love the Hand free, and the needle down the most on my 440QE. I am looking at the 830 and would love to have it, but lots of $$$$.

I can't believe I made my whole comment go away! I love the needle up down and FHS. I love the beautiful decorative stitches. I love being able to adjust the pressure foot pressure on my 440 and my daughter's 730. I love the basting stitch on my 930. I love all the marvelous feet. Our dealer here won't sell me the "Feetures" book, which I would love to have. I love the stitch quality on all three machines. I'd love the needle threader if only I weren't such a clutz! The magnifier has been a God-send. I love the sound of the machines when they are sewing, although I could do without all the annoying computer noises on the 730, which takes far too long to boot up. Adjustable pressure foot pressure on the 440 and 730. I wish the 440 had the marvelous Creative Consultant, which I discovered by accident on the 730. Since this past weekend, I'm learning to love the machine embroidery. I do wish the dealer here would give classes. Berninas are marvelous machines. We got my 930 in 1984 after my husband bought me a Singer. It was the worst machine I've ever used and just not acceptable.
My favorite feature is the FHS. My first Bernina was the original 830 purchased in the late '70's. The reason I purchased it rather than any other Bernina model was the FHS feature as it only came with the 830. During the thirty plus years to follow, I have used this feature on several other Bernina models. There are many other features that I love, but the FHS is used every time I sew.
Where do I begin? I love everything about my 200. I graduated to the 200 from a lower end of a different brand and WOW what a difference! Acurate stiches, needle down, FHS, and all those decorative stiches. Too much fun!
I love my new 640. I couldn't live without the threadcutter, it is a lifesaver. I also love the BSR and the walking foot.
My favorite feature on my Aurora 440 QEE is the speed control. It allows me to speed through straight stitching with ease and accuracy and sew intricate stitches slowly and carefully. My results in both cases are beautiful. I have been able to broaden the range of sewing projects I tackle because of the control the speed function gives me.
The BSR is my favorite! Hands down with
quilting gloves and I am in heaven. Give me a quilt top and I am in the sewing studio instantly!
The one feature I miss is the automatic lowering of my pressure foot when I start sewing. I know I can raise and lower with the knee control but it is not the same. I am just learning my Bernina machine and so far I am very happy with the overall quality of the machine. I may have started with a machine that will need to be replaced sooner than I expected as I continue to expand my sewing activities however it was within my budgeted amount. I also like the fact that I will be able to trade up as my sewing needs change.
I love the stitch regulator. I don't have to think how fast or slow to push my pedal to keep a steady pace and to make a beautiful even stitch when I'm machine quilting my projects. Although I'm just in the beginning stages of learning how to machine quilt, I can concentrate on how I want my design to stitch out on my projects rather than working so hard to make sure my stitch length is consistent. It's a whole new world of thought and frees me from stressing and tensing up at my machine. Thanks for asking!
My number one favorite would be the 1/4" marking - indispensible for a quiltmaker. Second would be the knee lift. I'm teaching my niece and nephew to quilt, and reaching through to the back of the machine to lift the presser foot lever is not easy for them. And what should every machine have (other than the ability to give us more than 24 hours in a day)? A dual-feed feature at the flick of a switch or the push of a button. It has so many uses, but is particularly useful for quilting!
I loveeeee the needle threader!! It seems like such a small thing, yet as my eyes get older ( not me, just my eyes! ) I find it harder and harder to get that darn thread into the needle! When I purchased my 440QE, it took me a little while to learn how to use it,(ok I know u have to be smarter than the machine) but once I did, it made using the machine so much easier.
I just totally love my Bernina! My favorite feature is probably the "needle down" position...I use it every time I sew!!
I love how easy it is to change my machine from sewing to embroidery. I've heard horror stories from friends who don't have Bernina machines about how much of a pain it can be. So much that they have one machine for embroidery and one just for sewing.
It is certainly hard to name just one, but that would be the knee lift and to sneak in a second, needle up/down. Keep those hands on the work so when piecing the points match as perfectly as possible!
I waited for 57 years before I got my first Bernina and sewed on a variety of other machines. But, the dependability of my Bernina is the best! Plus, I love the free-hand system! I got my daughter interested in quilting also, and bought her the Patchwork model, and for her birthday this year I gave her the free hand system lever also. We both can't live without it!!!
I LOVE the up/down needle control. I have an older 830, which is perfect for what I sew, but I borrowed my moms Artista 180 and discovered that wonderful feature.
Love my Berninas! Still have my original 1130 purchased in 1987. Now also have a 200/730E and an 830. The "one" feature I have absolutely loved since my first Bernina is the FHS. It is hard to pick just one feature though as there are so many that make sewing on a Bernina so wonderful.
My favorite feature is the blind hem stitch. In the busy hectic schedules that we all have it takes the place of hand sewing and it truly is a life saver. I love my Bernina as I can count on perfect sewing over and over again. Gone is the frustration of balled up thread, skipped stitches, and seam ripping. I have a Bernina 1010 and the performance is fantastic.
This is my first Bernina and I purchased the Bernina Artista 730. I like the fact that the machine is so easily programmed. There is not a lot of apparatus involved-just follow the well written directions in the manuals, push the right buttons and use the proper foot and you are ready to go
I love all of my "girls". I started collecting vintage Berninas and recently added a treadle model. It is a 117K and my fav feature, is that if the power goes out, I can still sew! All kidding aside, I love the quality of the Bernina. Is that a feature?
My favorite feature of my Bernina is the little button that keeps my needle in the down position when I finish a seam. That and the "beast" ploughs through anything. Oh how strong she is. :) Love my Bernina!!
The bigger bobbin on my 830. I can sew for hours and not have to rewind. Love my Bernina.
I like the needle up/down button & the low bobbin thread warning.
I love the dealer that came with my 830! No matter how tired she may be, you would never know because there's always a smile when I have a problem.
Oh yes, all the cool features, my favorite today probably would be the "cut the threads" button.
I am also very impressed with the quality of embroidery. Friends really like the little goodies I send out just for fun.
I primarily bought by Bernina to sew and quilt quilts. I love the quarter-inch line and foot, but the BSR really lets me do great things. Now that I've used the FHS and the needle up/down, I wouldn't want to do without them. I also really love to embroider--just wish that I could afford the digitizing software.
I have had several Berninas through the years starting with the original 830 and have come full circle with having recently purchased a new 830. I can't name just one favorite, but the knee lift would be first followed by the perfect applique stitch and dependibility.
The FHS is a must for fashion and quilt sewing! The needle down setting and foot pedal is a must too. I also love all of the special features on my 8 series. The dual feed, the space to the right of the needle, lighting, keeping track of the needle and size in the machine, needle threader ... with my hectic schedule I am able to make the most of minutes of sewing each day and the alarm lets me know when I have to leave! The fine precision of Bernina!
I bought my first Bernina 440 for the BSR.
My second for the great embroidery that Bernina 730E has. I would have to say that one of my favorite features is the scissors.
I have owned other brands of machines and Bernina is by far my favorite. It far surpasses the quality of the other brands I have owned. I will own nothing but a Bernina from now on.
Another great feature, having a GREAT dealer is a plus for owning a Bernina. My dealer goes above and beyond making sure that you know everything about your machine even after you have owned your machine for years. That is the best feature of my Bernina.
There are many favorites on my Bernina. The FHS and needle up/down option are on the top of my list along with the foot control tap but I also enjoy the BSR. It has made freehand quilting so much smoother and easier.
I would like to be able to put the pedal to the metal (aka foot control) and the machine automatically sew a 1/4", 5/8" or any other width seam I want, whether I'm chain piecing a quilt of sewing tight curves of the sleeves of dolls clothes.
I miss sewing. I'm in Iraq for a year, and it bugs me that I don't have a sewing to complete any of my projects. But I would have to say my favorite features would have to be the needle threader and the free motion sewing. I don't have to squint to get any project started trying to thread it myself and I'm a big quilter. I love creating my own designs with the free motion sewing.
My favorite feature on the machine is the needle down button. I just love having that. Next I would have to say would be the memory of the last stitch as I have had many occasions that I switch between 2 settings. After that it has to be those great Bernina feet ... the #10 edgestitch foot and the #57 patchwork foot with guide and the walking foot, wouldn't be without them!
There are two features that I use most often. They are the needle down and the 1/4" mark on the machine. I guess my favorite is the 1/4" mark. My quilting has improved by leaps and bounds due to that little mark.
Thanks Bernina!
I love oh so many things about my 830...ease of threading, space to work in, even feed, embroidery and the Jumbo hoop...Basically I like all Berninas for their reliability, 1/4" foot, knee lift, availability of many stitches! All this makes me love to sew!
I love the hands free needle lift/ knee lift- whatever you want to call it, as a quilter & home dec sewing fanatic, I LOVE IT. The only thing I could ask for would be a high capacity bobbin - or better yet, throw a spool of the same thread in the "bobbin" case as I have on top & threaded through the machine, and I could sew uninterrupted for days!
I LOVE my Bernina. My hubby bought me a Virtuosa 155 6 years ago as a surprise. It is my first Bernina, and I've been very happy with it. One thing that would be a big asset is a self winding bobbin. I know another brand had that years ago, and I don't know whether it was effective or not, but a low sensor and then the ability to self wind w/o taking the bobbin out would be the top of the world to me.
The FHS would be best and the needle down button comes in a very close second.
My favorite feature is the needle-down option combined with the heel kick. It makes sewing faster and easier. I have a 430 and would like a light or beep showing my bobbin thread is out.
I LOVE the FHS, and needle down. The two I can't live without! The precision stitching is obviously a must also. Having grown up and learning on a Bernina, and falling in love with sewing because of it - it was a real shock at the quality of stitches when I had to purchase a cheap machine just to have a sewing machine! I never got over being spoiled with the FHS (still knee jerk lol) and not being able to afford one of my own until now! I studied all the features of the different machines, being on a tight budget, but desperate for the right machine for my needs!
The one thing I would request in future models - especially the more affordable models, is MORE ROOM for quilting!! Give those of us that love to create, but don't have a huge high end budget, the room to move around and CREATE!! Many of us can make do with less stitches, still have a quality machine, and be able to quilt our own quilts -if they'd just give more throat space! I think they are losing a lot of customers because of the smaller throats! :(
Yes, the 820 is my DREAM machine. (literally dream about it, regularly.. sigh..) But the 180 will do everything I need it to do... if only more space!
I went from a 1008 to a 440 QE. What a difference it made. I love the needle up/down, the speed control and especially the BSR.
Best features for me are the quarter inch foot (a true quarter, needle down which is like having another hand and the free hand system.
Best features for me are the needle threader - my eyes have aged - even if the rest of me hasn't, hah hah. The other would be as a quilter the quarter inch foot. I have the 730E and am drooling over the 830E - don't think I will ever be able to have it. The only option I can think of now is selling my sou1!
I would love to see a larger bobbin. All the years of sewing and the bobbin remains the same size. And as long as we are dreaming, I would like that larger bobbin to rewind in place without having to remove what I'm working on.
My favorite feature is probably the needle down but I also love being able to combine two different stitches when I am stitching in the ditch using a straight stitch and combining it with a locking stitch. I just have to touch the one I want to use and then change to the other in a matter of seconds.
I love the automatic needle threader on the 830. I cannot do without that. Also the thread cutter. These two features are a must have, period!
I love the embroidery module. To me this is the Best feature.
The ability to use features in combination.....Needle down with the free hand knee lever...being able to manipulate stitch length, width, density..having a machine that sews with fine silk thread, kevlar & nomex thread all on the same machine. I call my Bernina the "Sew This"...after almost
two decades of using Berninas I can still find new projects to create and my Bernina does them all.
I would have to say that my FAVOURITE part of the 2 Berninas which I have is the FHS!! I believe that this is the best invention ever for Bernina to have come out with. I own a couple of other sewing machines as well but I do notice that when/if I use them I find my knee "swinging out" to the lever that isn't there....which brings a smile to my face & a thankfulness to my heart that I will always own a Bernina!! :D
For me, the automatic tie off is essential. I'm so glad not to have to back stitch and ruin the look of the work I've just done!
I love the needle threading mechanism probably the most! As my eyes age, I find it more difficult to thread manually. So much to chose from push button start and stop; limitless design potential, bobbin low screen message, where do you stop! Love it!
The one feature that I would miss most of all is being able to control precisely to the stitch whether the needle will be up or down when stopping. Being able to control the needle being in the fabric when stopping prevents even the slightest chance of having a crooked stitch. I own the 730 and with all its fanciness, I must have the needle down capability! No question!
I love the BSR on my machine. Its the best thing.
I have found that when I am on another machine I really miss my automatic thread cutter. I never thought I would love it so much but I do. It is so nice when I am piecing to not have to pick up scissors and waste all that thread.
As simple as it gets, the needle down feature is my favorite on my 4 year old Aurora 430E. I was amazed with this machine when I upgraded from my still functional 1955 Singer model 401A which my mother received as a wedding gift from her mother and passed it on to me when I went to college. (choice was college or wedding, I picked college)
The feature that I must have is the needle up/needle down. A close second would be the free-hand system.
For me, the most valuable feature is stitch perfection due to the powerful motor on my Bernina 240. It faithfully sews evenly over different fabrics and whatever stitch I am sewing is a masterpiece everytime. Who could ask for more!
Hands down, my favorite is absolutely the dual feed or the walking foot! I only last year started using the walking foot on my 200. The deciding factor in my 830 purchase was that the machine includes the dual feed. Love, love, love it!
I am completely charmed by the stitch perfection on my Activa 240. Every stitch is perfectly beautiful everytime. Such reliability is priceless.
I'd have to say that the selection of available feet has to be my second favorite feature. Since I am sure I can't live without my #10 Edgestitch Foot, I'll have to be buried with it!
I would love to have a light on the sewing bed that actually gets brighter when you are actually sewing, but dims when you are not...would that be an energy saver?
I also cannot live without some help threading the needle.
I am with Denise (right above me) in that my favorite thing is the "needle down." It is indispensable for both quilting and my doll sewing. :) k.
I am on my fifth Bernina Machine (not counting sergers) and I love everything about my 630E. FHS, Needle up/down on the foot control, Variable needle position, Perfect stiches, Variable speed control. But the best part of my Berninas is my great dealer and the wonderful teachers working at their store.
My favorite feature is the needle down - but really I love everything about my 1130 and have never seen a reason to upgrade. The only things that would make it perfect is a low bobbin indicator and if it had a bigger sewing area (harp) like the new 830. I drooled when I saw the 830 and it's sewing area real estate. I even commented to my local dealer that it was a shame that you didn't make a machine the same size as an 830 with it's wide harp but with simpler controls and fewer bells and whistles like my beloved 1130. I'd buy a machine like that in a New York Minute!!! I don't need or want all the fancy computer stuff and fancy over the top embroidery stuff but I do need and would love all that sewing room for quilting. PLEASE make one like that! My checkbook will be waiting. :)
My favorite feature is the needle down. If I had a wish feature, it would be to have the thread automatically cut for me.
What wonderful machines! I have found that there are MANY things about a Bernina I can't live without.
The top 3 would be: the free hand system - what a joy! The foot pedal. I love being able to put my needle up or down as needed with my foot. Lastly, the feet. They truly have inspired me to learn to do more! Amazing things those feet.
What it's missing that is important to me? A bigger bobbin.
Auto needle threader. When I was growing up I helped my grandmother when she made clothes for me by threading needles, pinning pieces together, etc. Now, I am the one who needs help threading needles, pinning pieces together, etc. I like auto needle threaders!
My favorite feature is a tie between the free hand system and the needle down feature. Wouldn't want to sew without them!
My 1st Bernina was a serger. Now long time owner of many models. Why! Consistant tention, after all that is what every stitch is made of! I have never looked back. Thank you Bernina for keeping quality in our sewing!
Sincerely, Peggy
Absolutely have to have needle up and down
As I "age", I find I rely on the automatic needle thread feature on my 730. Without it I CAN thread it eventually, but it sure does make my life easier and faster.
I've had a Bernina since my grandmother died in 1974 and I got hers. We've come a long way baby from that machine, which still sews like a trouper. So does my 180!!! Love Bernina!!
I have a 730, 153 and 1300 Serger. Love them all!!!! I love the FHS, BSR, needle up/down, automatic buttonhole, being able to use the foot peddle to regulate my up/down needle position but my favorite is being able to use my #12 foot, move my needle position and have absolutely beautiful, accurate, straight lines in my topstitching!
I have an older Bernina machine which I love! I guess my favorite feature would have to be the the self threading feature. It really does help make life easier! I would absolutely love to have one of the newer models, that would be a dream come true!
I have just learned to use the "favorites" on my 730 and I love it! No more trying to remember which one it was or how I adjusted it "just so"...
I have a Bernina 730, 153 (red) and a 1300 serger. Love them all!!! I love the FHS, BSR, needle up/down, automatic buttonhole, being able to control my needle up/down position with my foot peddle and my Favorite is using my #12 foot, moving my needle position to get the most beautiful, accurate, straight lines in my topstitching.
My favorite feature would have to be the needle threader. I know it is simple, but it makes my life so much easier!
I love the automatic bobbin winder on my Bernina 730. I have an old 930 Record and a 230, both of which I love but I forget that I have to press the foot pedal to wind a bobbin.
I would like to have a wireless foot pedal. Evne though it would require batteries, I think it would be nice to avoid getting the cord caught in my chair wheels.
I have a list of things that I love about my Bernina's. But since purchasing my Bernina 440QE, I have to say I love the embroidary unit. This is all new to me and I am having a great time with it.
I am a new Bernina 630 (with embroidery) owner. I would say that there are 3 features that I love so far, and 1 I miss from my Babylock which is what I sewed on for years!
The 3 I love (in no particular order)are the BSR, The free arm system, and the fact that I can wind a bobbin without un-threading the machine! that is so helpful when quilting and you run out in the middle. No more pre-winding and wasting time or thread.
The one feature I miss is the thread cutter, which I know is on other models but I wish it was on the 630. Whenever I go back to using my Babylock, I remember why I loved it so much!
I wouldn't be without my FHS and needle down features. Both are musts for me! Thank you, Bernina!
I'd have to say it's a tie between the FHS and needle up/down. I use them every time I sew. Runnerup would be the BSR. I'm still learning how to use it but I'm finding it to be a handy feature. I have a 440QE and one thing I wish it has is a low bobbin thread sensor. I'm a quilter and it bugs me that I may run out of thread in all the wrong places. If I knew it was low I could plan the best place to stop and replace the bobbin.
My favorite feature is the FHS (Free Hand System) I LOVE how handy it is while doing applique; I can keep my eye on the project and still make those small turns with both hands on my material.
Keep up the fantastic work,
Betty
I have an OLD Bernina 930 (yup, the one made in heavy metal, with the original metal bobbins, and pressure feet with original numbers!), which I absolutely ADORE and will NOT part with it! It was my very first Bernina, and I saved for 8 months in order to pay cash for it (NO, I do NOT have the best husband in the world)just so I could get the FHS. This, I think, has been my favorite feature throughout almost two decades, and I doubt I would be able to settle for anything less.
I started making art quilts when I was 65, and from the look of my early attempts at free-motion work, I figured I didn't have enough years left to perfect it--and then along came the Bernina Stitch Regulator. I love it, and it has given me freedom to concentrate on design.
The one feature I couldn't live without is the ability to tell the machine to stop stitching with the needle in the down position rather than manually ending that way. I LOVE that very basic, simple feature and other than the on switch is the button I most often press.
Most definitely the free hand system just love it. When I bought my Bernina my sewing improved tremendously.
I love my old 930 and the way it sews through anything without skipping a stitch. I can go from the thinnest fabric to thick jeans without changing any settings and it never skips a stitch. I doubt that's really considered a feature, but it's something I've never had with any other sewing machine and I can't live without it! Such a dependable machine!
If I have to choose only one, the Needle up/Needle down is like having a third hand. Whether garment sewing or finishing needlepoint projects like pillows and ornaments, this feature has been a great help.
The feature I couldn't live without, similar to quite a few people above is the needle down feature. That coupled with the FHS makes sewing soooo much easier. And who wants to fight your machine?
I am a Bernina girl through and through! My first was the 1010 that helped me win an honorable mention ribbon the first year I was quilting! It was a great mechanical machine that sold me on the FHS. Can NOT do without it. Then it was on to the 1230, then the 1530 that still lives with my daughter. I also have the Bernina Sport that I found used at our dealer and had to have it, too. It lives at my daughter-in-law's home. Today I sew on the 440 and love the BSR. It is a great machine. Most of all, I love my dealer support in KCMO. The owner and the mechanic are considered friends after all these years.
Much as I love my 440QE (and my 153QE before it), I have yet to see a machine from anyone that would have a system to actually keep my fabric running straight under the needle.
My 1/4" seams never measure precisely 1/4" all the way; I just can't seem to keep the fabric from veering off one way or the other.
I have the quilting foot but that isn't enough. I've tried those "stick me to your throatplate and I'll guide your fabric" tools. I now have a huge table that has areas to the left and behind the machine (and the sewing bed is level w/ the top of the table) and even that has not helped.
I've gone faster, slower -- and I can't lick the swerving fabric problem :(
But I do love my Bernina!!
Too many features I love on my 830, but I really appreciate the larger bobbin. I have sewn and embroidered for years and this saves time and trouble of rewinding. Needle down and hands free device are close seconds to my favorite feature. I have loved the hands free since my first Bernina--25 year old 930 which still sews like a dream. I love to use it for Home Dec items.
I love my "bernina". I enjoy every one of the features on it but I could not live without the stitch regulator and the hands free system. I have had my QE440 about a year and I would not like to sew without it now. It is the best machine I have ever had.
I have three machines, 153 QE, 730 and my newest is the Activa 230 PE. My favorite is the needle down. I love being able to have that needle down. I also love the automatic thread cutter on my 730. I find myself trying to push that button on the other two machines.
The Free Hand System was the deciding factor for me when I purchased my Bernina 1260 15 years ago. Now I can't sew without it.
I love the needle-down feature. It was why I "had" to upgrade from my 130 to my 440QE. Now, if it would just stay set when I turn the machine off, I would be in heaven! (Same for stitch length ...)
I have a 630 and I can't imagine having a different machine other than an 830. I love my 630. It does everything that I, as a designer need it to do. Wish I could post a picture of the last two pieces that I created using my 630. I would have to say that the needle punch attachment and the BSR foot are my favorite parts of my machine. Well that and my embroidery unit. I really broke in my machine creating a wool full length jacket needle punching the whole thing with wool yardage, wool roving and angle hair. The final piece won me first place in the Alaska Fiber Festival in 2008. I have worked on several different kinds of machines over the years and the only improvement that could be made is,rolled hem foot. Across the board of sewing machines it is unusable. I can make a much finer and beautiful rolled hem using couture techniques rather than the foot created for this purpose. Unfortunately this is similar in every double rolled foot for every machine out there. Improving this foot would be a great help. As a clothing designer finishing techniques are important to me, especially when I am making something for a client. The quality of my work is something I value highly, it is the same with my tools.
Hi Kirsten - If you send a couple photos to me at joblogs@berninausa.com, I can add them to your comment. Jo
My Bernina 820 helped me go from sewer/quilter to artist. Im free.
Anything I can imagine I can create!
I love the Freehands system. Can't live without it. It makes sewing so much easier.
My favorite feature is the needle up/down. I do a lot of quilting and that feature is extremely helpful. I have an older Bernina that doesn't have the automatic thread cutter. I think that would be my favorite if I had it.
The one thing I don't think I could live without is the needle down feature. I know it is not a new feature, it was on my 1530 and now it is on my 430, but it is essential for me. I would like to know when the bobbin is running out, but needle down is the most important thing to me given that all the machines have Bernina stitch quality, which can't be beat.
It is very difficult to come up with just one favorite feature. I would have to say the needle up/needle down is my "to go" feature on any type of sewing that I do. Close 2nd's (or 3rd's) are the automatic tension, speed control, walking foot, & extra large table extension. As to what I would dearly love to have on my machine is the FHS system and automatic thread cutter that the Bernina has. In fact, the Bernina "8" Series has so many favorite features that, if I could buy another machine right now, it would be one of those.
My favorite feature is the automatic presser foot and needle up/down. After sewing on my 830 I go to my 153 and don't always remember to lower my presser foot
I started sewing when I was 12 and now I`m 67 years old.I received my own personal miracle when some wonderful person invented the machine needle threader. It used to take several minutes to thread the needle, now it takes 2 seconds.
I have a 440QE and I love the knee lift, but I wish it didn't make a clicking noise every I start using it. If it were quieter, it would be so much better. I also love the fact that I can wind bobbin thread without having to press down on the foot pedal or stop sewing. And I especially love the BSR.
If there were some things I could add to my machine, it would be to have the presser foot go into hover mode every time I stop sewing (like my Pfaff machine does). That is so invaluable for machine applique. I also wish that I could get the needle to go up by tapping on the top of my foot pedal instead of having to press down very hard on the bottom of the pedal. And finally, I wish my machine had the dual feed system (also like my Pfaff) so that I wouldn't have to use a walking foot and I could get even feeding all the time. A low bobbin indicator would be great, too, but not necessary.
I like the quarter inch quilting foot
I bought a Bernina 830 in 1978-so yes the
old model- which was my introduction to FHS. It is the best and I would never have a machine without it. And as others have mentioned I try to "use" it even on other machines.
I love the knee operated presser foot lever! And I wrote that before I even read the beginning of your blog entry!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I have three Berninas and some Featherweights. I love the FHS system on my Berninas, and also the BSR for quilting. I have my old workhorse the 1530, Alex Anderson machine and the 200/730 and love each one of them.
I am crazy about the fact I can rewind a bobbin without unthreading my machine but my favorite feature is the stitch regulator. It's heaven.
I really like the BSR. I could never get the hang of merely dropping the feed dogs and going to town. The BSR has helped me go from quilt tops to finished projects, and anyone who quilts knows that is a big deal.
In addition to the FHS, which I can't live without, I really appreciate needle down setting. Saves me all the time!
I have a Singer XL 6000 and the features that I love in that machine are: self winding bobbin and self threading. I love to do FSL in this machine because I don't have to worry about winding the bobbin every time, the machine stops winds the bobbin and continues sewing. A feature that I would love to have in my sewing machine is a foot free system. My mother's old Elna had it and I loved it. Instead of running the machine with a foot pedal you run it pushing a handle with your knee. There is no more loosing your foot pedal every time you go to sew. I wish manufacturers would put this mechanism in place again.
My favorite feature is the machine threader. My close vision isn't what it use to be and when I am using the embroiderer and changing colors frequently it is a tremondous time saver and keeps me from getting stressed/frustrated. In other words is helps me keep my cool and sanity!
I need a mega bobbin! :)
I am a mediocre sewer, but I cant imagine life w/o my FHS & needle down position. I am looking for a cheap 2nd machine for my cabin & just can't imagine going for a machine w/o these features. I am so spoiled.
Folks,
Although I learned to sew in the 1950's, the Singer machine I used had no reverse. Every seam had to be secured by "tieing off by hand". Many machines later, my new 830 has a place of honor in my sewing room. As I read and re-read the 200+ pages of all the wonderful things this machine will do, I think of two things: how thankful I am that I do not have to tie off every seam by hand and that a dedicated 4-H leader shared her heart and sewing machine with an 8 year old girl that wanted more than anything to learn to sew.
At first, I really couldn't see a "need" to have the FHS...lifting the presser foot had never been a problem...but now...don't take away my FHS!! I also love, love how I can hover the presser foot so I can get my fabric exactly where I want it! And just one more (although I could go on all day)the thread cutter just makes me smile!
I love the accuracy of my Bernina and the quality of the accessories (even though they are pricey). But I want a bigger bobbin! I seem to be always winding bobbins. The needle threader, the FHS and the foot control tap are all great .. but I want a bigger bobbin.
I believe a wonderful feature for a sewing machine is to have little screw out levelers as lifts for the back edge of your machine. When taking a sewing machine to a retreat or class..it is nice to set the back side of the machine up some which improves your visual area..and is more restful to the wrists. I am a new owner of a Bernina Virtuosa 150 an older model, but I am proud to finally own a bernina.
I love the walking foot and the straight stitch plate. Both are invaluable for quilting.
I love the fact that on the 830 I can sew without the foot pedal. This is an imprtant feature when considering immobility from surgery on my right foot. I may not be able to drive for 6 weeks but I will stay busy sewing
I just bought my 820 in Dec because of the large open area to quilt my projects.
I have owned a Bernina for almost 20 years and see my friends buy different machines but after a year, they too own a Bernina. . .
Before I bought my first Bernina, I sewed on a very basic straightstitch/zigzag stitch machine. I was learning to do piecing for quilting, and it would drive me crazy when I'd have to rotate the wheel to lift the needle up out of the fabric. My favorite feature is that the needle is in an up (or down if you choose) position everytime I stop----no more reaching for the wheel.
I started on my great-grandmother's treadle so I appreciate just about all the features. Since my little brother bought me a Bernina 430 for my birthday in November I have learned how the walking foot makes quilting so easy and how wild and crazy you can be with free motion quilting. Now I'm just looking forward to getting an 800 series because I love doing that embroidery!
Most definitely my favorite feature is adjustable speed. I don't think I would have learned to quilt without it on my 1260, and now that I've got the 440QE, it has made the transition to the BSR even easier. (And as a free motion quilter definitely needle down ranks high on the list.)
I love the self threader because my eyes aren't what they used to be. And I use the knee lift all the time now; it took awhile to get used to it, but now I wouldn't sew without it. Also love the needle down.
Lets see....I no longer love "my" Bernina....because I used by girlfriends 820....now I LOVE her Bernina!!!! I could go on and on and on about what I love about that machine....but that is not what you asked for....so I'll get back to the subject. I would like a Bendable Bright Light type light pre-mounted to the machine. More light is better!!! If I were designing a new machine I'd put more distance between the bed and the top of the machine....more open depth and width. I know it would be huge then....but since you asked....that is my thought :)
Smiles,
Kelly Jackson
I love the needle threader and the needle down
I teach quilting classes and when I sit at a student's sewing machine and can't find the needle up/down button I'm lost! I love my decorative stitches too. Just upgraded from the 440 to the 450 so I could get wider stitches.
My favorite machine is Pfaff's. I LOVE the IDT which means the top and bottom fabric match up and no more seams not matching or having to "push" one fabric under the needle to keep both even.
Number one is needle up needle down and the free hand system. The foot pedal is so important to rest your foot. The free arm made sewing for our daughters a joy when they were very young. I remember looking for a new machine in the early 70's and salesman at Sears sending me to the "Bernina" dealer so I could get a free arm machine that would withstand the amount of sewing I did with 3 girls. I had worn out the bobbin race in my Singer twice. My 831 did me proud for many years. And now the new 830 is a dream!!! I'm not sure I will ever learn everything it can do.
My favorite feature is the knee lift. Unfortunately, my machine needs to make a trip to the repair shop! I really miss it.
I love my 440QE and the features that rate at the top for me are the needle up/down, even feed foot and dependability of the machine.
The features I would love to see added are more throat space, more light and a signal for a low bobbin. Thanks for asking!
I have an old machine and I am lusting for a new machine - hopefully in June for my birthday. I want a needle threader and a Top-load bobbin on my new machine! Of course a computerized machine would be a dream come true.
I love the needle up/down button and the ability to raise and lower the needle with the foot pedal. I never realize how much I use it until I use a machine without it, and find myself pushing down with my heel all the time.
A new feature I'd like to see is a cordless foot pedal. That cord is always getting in the way.
I love all the pretty decorative stitches! Don't ask how many I've actually used, but I LOVE browsing through them.
I would like to see Berniana add firmware to the 200 and 730 so we could use the Jumbo Hoop. I would be willing to pay for the update and a spacerlike the small free arm adpter) and table so I could use this great feature, since the 830 is out of my price range.I feel there are a lot of sewers who purchased the 730 prior to the 830's release and they would really like the Jumbo hoop but cannot afford another machine. It would be great customer service.
I absolutely LOVE my 830!! In fact, I already own a Husquvarna Viking Designer Diamond that I am selling at a (significant!) loss just so I could go ahead and make the jump to the Bernina. It is so hard to pick just one feature, since there are SO MANY to choose from. I guess it would make sense to name the features that sold me on Bernina: the Bernina Stitch Regulator, the fast speed -- especially for embroidery, the large sewing field, the Jumbo hoop (no repositioning required!), extra large bobbin, and the dual feed -- no walking foot required anymore. But, honestly, the best "feature" about my Bernina has been my dealer and the Bernina online community. I have participated in so many webinars and downloaded lessons from the Bernina site and I am enrolled in two virtual Bernina series at my dealer. I feel like I am really getting the inspiration to use the machine to its (and my) fullest potential. I can't think of anything better than that!!!!
Oh! Can I add a "would like to have" feature? How about wireless network capability to I can send designs (and updates) to my machine without any connections!?
I can't live without my walking foot. It has saved many quilts and garments. The other can't-be-without is the needle up/down function. I remember sewing on other machines where you had to go slowly at the end and watch where the needle ended... it was awful.
I love the BSR!!! Makes me ever so happy!!
I have a 1230 and I love the "needle down" option. This machine was such an upgrade from my old Montgomery Ward machine. (Yes, MW did sell sewing machines.) I also like that everything is so compact as everything you need fits in the carrying case.
I love the easy way I can put different feet on my Bernina
I've had my machine for 10 years now and just discovered the "basting" stitch! I cannot believe I let this stitch go unnoticed for so long. I've been making spiral fabric roses and was basting them by hand and decided to use the basting stitch feature. What a time saver! I can even adjust the width of the basting stitch and by lowering the tension a bit, I can pull the bobbin thread and voila, I finished what was once a very tedious job to a breeze in just seconds on my machine (180)!
My favorite feature on my 440QE is the BSR. I bought the QE three years ago when I decided to learn to quilt. It was never my intent to machine quilt on my home sewing machine, but the BSR came bundled with my QE so (at the encouragement of my local dealer) I took a series of classes in machine quilting with the BSR. I love it. I can't imagine ever switching to using a long arm machine. But I need more room to the right of the needle. I have been able to stipple quilt up to a queen-sized quilt, but I want to make king-sized quilts. The feature I would most like to have added is a sensor to detect low bobbin thread so that I don't run out of bobbin thread in the middle of a stipple in the center of the quilt.
Definitely the needle up/down feature!
My favorite feature on my Bernina Artista 170 is the ability to set the needle stop position either up or down. This is the first machine that I have owned with that capability. I purchased it used and am so blessed to own a Bernina. I am so impressed with the quality of the machine and the service I receive from my local dealer. I hope in the future that a feature could be invented to answer questions and find items for the members of your household while you are sewing. :)
I am 83 years young! Having owed Bernina's for the past 20 years did not think there was anything more that could be done after purchasing the Artista 200. Low and behold the 830 is another eye opener. There is nothing about it that I don't like and nothing I could do without. Perhaps my favorite could be the automatic threading. If you don't want to lose your ability to learn buy this machine - it will keep your brain active.
My favorite feature is the 1/4 inch foot, because I am just starting and I have a hard time keeping the right seem allowance. I also like the needle threader, even though it took me awhile to figure it out!
I love all the features, but the one I really miss is the FHS on my Activa, always waiving my knee around when I use that machine as I get so used to using it on my 630! Also, would just love the 830 as would really like a thread cutter as shown on that machine.
Hi Lynn - Did you know that the Free Hand System can be added to some of the activa models? It's an optional accessory for the activa 130/135/135S/140/145/145S/220/230. The technician at your local BERNINA store can ordea a FHS kit and install if in your activa. In addition, the foot control with needle up / needle down can be used with all of the activa models. There's nothing to install; just have your BERNINA store order the foot control for you. Jo
I love the CB bobbin system. Perfect stitches every time! I also love the powerful motor that just goes and goes. The FHS and the heel tap for needle up/down is also wonderful. I bought my first Bernina, a 1031, in 1992. I didn't buy another one until you started putting the CB system on better machines.
I couldn't believe it when my family gave me a Bernina for my birthday, and they know nothing about sewing!! I love the automatic threader, since my eyes aren't so sharp any more. The reliability and consistency of the machine is what amazes me. Thank you for keeping a good product GOOD!
That "perfect" stitch! Because...if you must unsew, it is easy to rip out.
The feature on a sewing machine that I would like to see: an adjustment to make more room between the presser foot and the feed dogs, as well as additional lights to enhance my "seeing" power. I look forward to purchasing a Bernina embroidery machine...some day.
Hi Sheila - Did you know that the BERNINA Free Hand System raises the presser foot 2mm higher than the presser foot lifter? It lowers the feed dog at the same time, so actually provides more than 3mm extra space between the foot and the stitch plate. 3mm doesn't sound like much, but in terms of space under the foot it's quite a lot! Jo
After reading, I think my machine is antiquated! Do they make a machine that an thread it's own needle? That's a feature that I would love!
Hi Judy - Nearly all current BERNINA machines have a needle threader, and the BERNINA 820 and 830 actually thread the needle for you at the push of a button! Jo
I'm an electronic junky so, I love all of the newest features. One that I can't live without is being able to change the needle position and lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the open toe foot. Works better than any foot to edge stitch, applique, etc.
I have just started using my cut button on my 730 and can't think of why I didn't use it more be for this. I learn more about the machine the more I use my 730 and loving it
I love the needle down function, and the side to side ability for the needles as well. oh yes, and the BSR.
I'd love automatic tension on a sewing machine. I'm researching Berninas at the moment, after having bought a Bernina serger for myself and a Bernina 220 for my daughter. Going from an old viking of mine to her 220 with a thin fabric was HUGE. It seems to automatically adjust to fabric thicknesses. I loved it.
On initial thought, my first response was the needle down button. I do really love it and use it often but in working on a project this evening I realize not only do I love my Bernina feet, I also LOVE how easy they are to change! I also really appreciate my 'Barbie' box, it is so handy to have at my right with all the bobbins and feet just waiting until I need them. And then when I need to pack everything to class or sewing with friends I am assured that I will have what I need with me.
I love the BSR and the needle threader for my over 50 eyes (LOL).
I'm new to sewing, I like the foot attachment!
The feature that I could not do without is the needle up/needle down. I have to at least mention what a fabulous feature BSR is, also. Now that I have an 830, I can not even think of a feature I would want that I don't have!
I love my old 930 and my new 830. What I can't live without is the FHS the BSR and the even feed D feet, needle up and down, scant 1/4 " needle position. The embroidery is addicting, the endless feature is amazing. I like creating my own stitches and being able to use them in embroidery or the software. But I would love to have new decorative stitches available for downloading every year to add to the 830, maybe with each update! Stitches for holidays and children's wear.
The feature that I have truly learned to love and would have a hard time doing without is the FHS. And now that I have the 830, the hoover feature. It is hard to sew on a different machine - I keep waiting for the foot to automatically lift!
Billie
I am on my fourth Bernina. I keep moving up. I now have a 640. I love it! What keeps me coming back is the solid design of the machine, FHS, Needle down/up, ease of changing the needle and feet, the variety of feet, the education available to learn new techniques, and the dealer! I would not own anything else!
The one feature that I couldn't do without on my machine is the scissor cutting feature. I recently had the opportunity to help a friend get a new machine, and when going around to different shops, one sales person said to me, "Well, if she's never had it, she won't miss it" Well, in my opinion it a feature I could not live without! When quilting, it is awesome because you don't have to move everything to cut that bottom thread! I would have missed the feature for my friend!
I love the needle down probably best with my 730, but the thread cutter and the FHS are also favorites.
My very very favorite is the FHS and the needle down/up. I have had many many machines in the past but I use the FHS constantly in my bernina. Just wish it had the thread cutting option on my 440.
I could never live without the knee lift - love this feature! I also love the needle down feature on my 430. If I could design my own machine it would definitely have both of those features, plus the ability to easily see how much thread is left on my bobbin.
I love all the all the features on my 830. The BSR, quilting frame, jumbo hoop, are favorites. The one thing I would love to have would be a wireless pocket size remote, that would tell me when the thread needed changing or the embroidery was done, so that I could be doing other things around the house while embroidering.
I love my 440, hard to pick a favorite, but I was amased when I first used my machine because it didn't eat my fabric. It would be nice to have a thread cutter. Thanks Bernina
When reading about the contest, the first thing that popped into my mind was FHS. Then I read the original blog and many of the comments and see great minds think alike. I have a new 440QE and I love it.
My favorite feature is the free hand system followed closely by the needle up/down position with the foot peddle. On my wish list would be:
--a way to run a spool of thread through the bobbin instead of having to wind bobbins. (As a machine quilter, I tend to use a lot of thread during the quilting process and those bobbins just don't last near long enough!)
--a way to set my tension to cotton thread as I rarely use polyester and so that factory setting doesn't work at all for me. Terry
My dream machine will have all the wonderful features plus the one feature that has been missing--a true stitch creator!! That's right I want and have wanted for years the ability to have the stitches I want in the machine. I don't need or want a bijillion alphabets that don't get used nor children stitches that will never be used. I'd love to see the ability to create stitches on a cell phone and on the machine and on the computer. Of course I want 9 mm. Bring back what was on the 1630 only make it better and into the 21C. When I see a machine with that feature I will start saving my pennies.
Mary
Bernina's are the best sewing machines. I love the needle up/down needle position with the foot pedal. I love the small size of the freearm and directional sew for mending. I also love that particularly the working stitches can reverse - again for mending. I have three boys. It also does all the decorative stuff as well.
For me, it's the needle down feature!
As others have stated, the many features we love on our Berninas simply come together to make sewing a enjoyable pleasure. After lugging out an old White machine I had since my 20's, and never having fun sewing,I purchased a Virtuosa 153QE and I love it! With all the features from FHS,Needle up down, stay stitch, feed dog adjustment, and the wonderful lighting system and needle threader, each time I sit down to my BABY I Have fun. The only thing I covet would be the BSR. But I don't think I could ever give up the quality that all Bernina's possess.
I have 2 Berninas. While I was trying to decide whether to say the FHS, the needle down, the cool/easy to change feet or the BSR, I remembered a feature that really makes me smile. I love that my newer Bernina tells me when it is time to oil or take in for service - no more guessing!
I could not live with out the Needle Down Button. It is the handiest part of all my sewing.
Thanks,
Janet
I absolutely love the needle positions. I have a 9mm machine, and enjoy using both standard and 9mm presser feet, especially #10, to get perfect topstitching or seam allowances on tricky fabric. You can put the fabric completely under the presser foot and then use needle position to achieve a perfect 1/4" seam on tricot, for example.
I love my Berninas, and would really like to see a combination walking foot and #10 foot - it would be a great combination for those who can't really afford the dual feed feature on the 800 series machines! I don't know whether this combination foot is mechanically possible, but would be great if it is!
I recently purchased a Bernina and my favorite feature is being able to sew light fabric to heavy fabric. With my previous machine, that would never have been possible.
The next feature I hope to have is an embroidery machine.
My favorite feature is the adjustable presser foot pressure!
Oh my goodness, I love to sew anything and everything, EVERYDAY! I started out with a Bernina Sport and bought a 730 Artista last year....I love every single feature....Makes sewing a dream....I am in Heaven!!!
I love my 200E so very much, I can't pick just one or even two of my favorite things,,,,love the knee lift, it is such a handy useful thing, and I love the ability to change speeds, and needle positions, in fact, I am in love with the WHOLE machine...
I absolutely absolutely love my Bernina. I, at the present, sew on a 430...however, I have about worn it out and will be purchasing an 830 soon. For the 430, I love my BSR. I love being able to free motion with complete confidence that my stitches will remain consistent.
The Start/ Stop feature is the best!! Many years ago I lost the use of my legs from the waist down. I used to hold the foot pedal under my armpit to operate my machine. When I found out I could set the speed, and just push a button to start and stop my machine operation, I felt that someone had been thinking about disabled people, and that at last someone cared for those of us in this position. I am fine and well now after therapy and care, and even though I have the use of my legs back, this is still the feature I look for before I even consider the purchase of any machine. It maybe simple, it is always over looked, but for some of us it is the gateway to some sort of a normal life.
I am new to sewing and have only used two machines. I own a Singer that has always given me trouble. I am currently borrowing a friend's older model Bernina 830. I know it may sound simplistic, but my favorite feature without a doubt is the easy threading of the needle and bobbin! It takes me about 10 minutes to thread both on my machine and less than a minute on the Bernina. I also like that the bobbin slides in from the front and does not drop in under the needle.
The FHS is one feature that I have found to be indispensible in sewing. I also find attaching the presser feet on my Aurora 440 very helpful. The presser feet functionality make sewing so much easier. (Garment sewing)
Oh, I cannot live without the pattern begin feature. When I am using a fancy stitch to border an applique or running fancy combo stitches down a blouse. It is an amazing feature that allows perfect precision sewing. Love it!
I have a 630 and I love the "Pattern Extend" feature. I use it often in quilting.
I recently had my 165 serviced and was just so glad to bring her home....
I agree with so many previous comments, and it's hard to choose. But for me, after having owned some difficult machines in the past (not Bernina), I'd have to say: the absolute reliability. A first-class machine; a first-class company.
I am fortunate enough to own a Bernina 820 and I love it. The feature that I love most? The hover feature. I don't know how I lived without it. It's brilliant.
The feature I couldn't sew without is the needle threader. Even with a magnifying glass I have trouble seeing to thread a needle. If my machine didn't have this feature, I could only sew when someone younger stopped by and thread it for me!
There are so many features on my Bernina that I absolutely love. Many have mentioned them before me. I have commented plenty of times that truly a person thinking outside the box created such a lovely machine. But the one thing that I just could not live without today is the sound the Bernina makes as it stitches away. It is so quiet as it works away on whatever project I have going. It is like listening to the Ferrari at a F1 race - distinctive.
I've been a sewer since elementary school. I owned (and used regularly) a Singer for over 30 years. 5 years ago I purchased my first Bernina (165E)---WOW! have I had a fun time since then. My single most favorite feature? the incredible ease in switching pressure feet!! [the number of specialty feet is making my sewing time extremely enjoyable too] I am not too old to learn something new!
Thanks for such a great machine!
Not sure whether this is a double post...
in addition to so many of the comments posted above, I'd have to say: the Bernina commitment to excellence. After struggling with other machines, I've become a complete Bernina fan with my Artista 165E. A great machine; no complaints.
My favorite feature is speed control on the pedal. I don't have to worry about having a lead-foot and can concentrate on the important things.
The auto thread cutter - hands down. I was going to get the 630 and changed to the 640 at the last moment just for that reason - love it! Also love the needle threader - far better than the one on my other brand machine. What else? The ease of changing the tension, of adjusting the stitch length - I could go on and on. Dreaming of the 830 so I can have all those fabulous features too!
My favorite feature is the automatic buttonhole maker! It's so easy and fun to watch, too. :)
I would also love to see the 730 updated to allow usage for the jumbo hoop. Since the 830 may always be out of reach for me, having that update would make the machine ideal - to be able to embroider large pictures without a lot of re-hooping and make some of the in- the- hoop projects that exceed the embroidery area. Otherwise, I love having all that the 730 does!!!
I love the knee lift!
The Best feature on a Bernina machine, WOW what a hard question, there are so many awesome features on Bernina's that you just don't get on other machines. But if we have to narrow it down to just one, it would be the infinite control for stitch width and length on all stitches, I know its the stepping motors and curcuit boards that do this but Bernina has done a SWEET job building there machines. KEEP UP The GREAT WORK !!!
I have a fairly simple machine, but an so delighted with the decorative stitches. In dreaming, the BSR, I believe would be a favorite feature!
I think the embroidery capabilities are just spectacular! It is amazing what the new sewing machines can do now everything from quilting to embroidery. I have a 29 year old mechanical machine but love the possibilities of the newer technology. These newer machines revitalize your interest in sewing.
I have a 440 and the stitch regulator is the best. I have increased my quilt production by many times with this feature. Thank you for this Bernina.
The best feature is the Stitch Regulator. It allows for creativity and easy of free motion quilting.
I don't own my own machine yet...but I borrow my Mom's Bernina often. I have 8 children and constantly I am mending holes, hemming up their hand-me-downs or sewing new zippers on jeans or jackets. My favorite feature is the machines amazing ability to get through the jeans even when it is folded up 4 layers thick.
I love my free hand system FHS on my 200 and love the BSR on my 440.
I recently bought a Bernia 210 , I love it totally, It has inspired me to contiune learning how to sew and take care of my machine.
The new light. My older machine has the bulb, my new Bernina has the new light, and what a eye-saver. The new light has allowed many new creative lights to emerge. I am now able to appreciate the BSR and needle down features while I busy myself using the hands off Bernina feature.
I would absolutely love a monogram option for my sewing machine!
My sewing machine is a hand me down - which I love and is a great old swinger - they never go out of style - but the bobbin always gets stuck and the thread balls up which sucks! - I would love to have a new one - I asked for one for a wedding gift and didnt get one - But I will try to win this at least :-) Happy Easter
I'd love to see the FHS positioned up higher on the machine--2" above the needle bed, so that the machine can be placed on any table, or fit into any table. Ask me what my favorite feature is on my Bernina? That is like telling me to pick my favorite ice cream at the parlor...okay, automatic scissors! (however, that's not on my 440QE, ...so my favorite feature on my 440QE is the easy interchangeable walking foot...NO screwdrivers !!! YES !!!
Very hard to give just one! I love the memory for all the stitch patterns, and of course, the needle threader. Love to have a button that fixes a latte.
LOL! I've already asked the designer to add a cappuccino maker ;)
I have a bernina serger for many years. It will last forever.
I have my grandmother's old Singer and I love the foot pedal.
smchester at gmail dot com
I love all the features but without a doubt, my favorite is the on/off button. When I turn my Bernina on, there is that "hmmmmmm." That "hmmmmm" says "This is a serious machine and I can take on any project you have. After several years I still love that sound.
I have the 1008, and as far as I am concerned, it is the perfect machine. It just sews and sews and sews, never tiring out and does just what I ask of it. That is what I love.
I love the hover feature on the 830 while piecing a quilt. It's one of those features I didn't know I needed until I used it.
I own the Bernina 830, the newest, awesome Machine bernina ever came out with, the feature I love the most is the absolute check, this feature allows you to check and move your embroidery design exactly where you want it no more guessing, I find this absolutely necessary for perfect placement. Denise Fischer ;0) Tucson Arizona
I absolutely LOVE the thread cutter on my 730. A lot of the other features I take for granted, like my FHS, touch screen, etc. But every time I use my thread cutter it's just ahhhhhhhhh.
Our sewing machine is 40 years old. I like that we can mend or make curtains.
Even on my ancient 1090 I have the wonderful foot pedal options for needle control, and the knee lever for hands free lifting. Love it.
My sewing machine has no bells and whistles. It is ancient. My favorite feature is that it still works when I need it.
I absolutely love my 830 "Mabel" named after my grandmother who passed her love of sewing onto me. It is hard to narrow down one favorite feature but I think I would say the automatic threading as my eyesight isn't what it used to be! Something I would like to see would be a feature where you input the fabric you are embroidering and suggested stabilizers for the design selected would be given. I also have to say another wonderful favorite from Bernina is their support and education - it's the best~!
Hi Teresa - While your 830 won't tell you what stabilizer to use, it does have a Creative Consultant that lets you select a fabric and a technique (such as embroidery), and then suggests appropriate needles, stitches, and presser feet. To access the Creative Consultant, press the button at the far right that looks like a little book with a C on it. In the first screen you'll select the fabric first, and then the technique from the icons that appear at the bottom of the screen. The next screen includes needle, stitch, and presser feet information, as well as links to a variety of related topics, Jo
First, let me say that I love my Bernina 440! But there are a few things that would make things so much better. Some may be in the 830...but since that isn't in my price range, it would be nice to have them a machine similar to the 440.
- when the design is sent to the machine and is too large for the hoop, it should adjust itself.
- the cords should retract, like in a mixer. I really do not like having cords everywhere.
- also like a mixer, we should be able order a pink machine, or red, or whatever. Just think how colorful a class would be.
- a battery in the machine, similar to a laptop, so that if in a class someone unplugs your machine by accident, you don't lose your work.
- a larger bobbin, yes LARGER is always better!
- a light that hits just the bobbin area for cleaning, instead of having to go get a flash light.
- a better way to replace the hook after cleaning...it should snap into place so that there is a strong click! and you know it is in there correctly.
- finally, when machine embroidery, and you just happen to leave the room, and the machine runs out of thread, the machine should just STOP! and you know right where you are.
Again, I LOVE my Bernina.
Thanks for asking!
Bernina gives me inspiration for my work

It is really hard to pick out just one favorite feature. I have the 830 and there are so many things on this machine that I absolutely love. But since you have asked for my favorite feature, I would have to say that it is the ability to combine stitches in my sewing machine, save them in my sewing machine and then take them into my Bernina V6 software and play with them. It doesn't get much better than this!!!!!!
I love the freehand system. Once I got used to it I can't live without it. The BSR is another great feature.
If there's anything I'd like to have on my 440 it would be a thread cutter and a way to see when the bobbin is empty.

Hi, Just purchased my new Bernina 430 and one of the feet I got most excited about in the class to learn about my machine and feet was......the #10 foot. I loved how in the ditch I could actually sew and be so accurate. I'm so excited to make a table runner so I can "play" with my new foot !!!! I feel so pro with this foot with how nice things look with it !!! Sure it will be a favorite for a very long time !! ( Yes , I'm a new bee to quilting and me thinks some have kept this a secret ?????) Just kidding.
I have many favorites, but one that has really spoiled me is the needle threader on my Aurora 440. With my mature eyesight, it has really been a time saver.
On my 440 QE, it is a toss-up between the walking foot and the BSR. I have often thought about which I couldn't live without and the answer is always the one I'm not using at the moment!
I love my 440QE - it has changed my life! (I was sewing on a 20-year old Kenmore that sold for $179 new before...) I'm torn between the FHS and the foot pedal needle control, but if I had to choose just one I'd say the FHS.
My favorite feature is the BSR, followed at close second by the hands-free system. This was a really tough question to answer!!
My favorite thing about my machine is all the feet you can get to do different things. You can get a foot for just about any application you wish. My favorite foot?.... the RUFFLER! No more basting and pulling!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the thread cutter on my machine, and also the hover setting for my presser foot :)Those are just a few of my favorite things on my new 820.
Well my little girl hasn't got duel feed or automatic snipping but what she has got is more important. Reliability of beautiful straight stitching. Once set for a difficult fabric it is with ease that it is stitched. Of course it helps that my Aurora has a beautiful name and not just a bunch of numbers. She does sometimes dream of having a sister called 830 but hey, dreams are free are they not? ;-)

I have the 730, and I LOVE the free hand system... My son likes applique on his items, and it's SOOOOO easy now!
I can't live without the needle down feature, but the FHS feature of my 200E is a close runner up!
I love the hands free system and the needle down. Those are really a big deal to me, and I love how simple it is to change feet or switch to a different switch. I can't imagine not having any of these features. The one thing that really helps me lots more than I ever expected is the needle threader. I own a Virtuosa 155. Wish I had a stitch regulator.
I have the 830 and it is awesome. I love the way you can set the needle in either the up or down position. I also love all of the stitches and being able to sew in different directions.
I have the Bernina 910 and the 440. I would have to say I love the quality of the 910 that it will sew through anything without hesitation. Great great machine the durability of the Bernina brand can't be beat.
I sew, embroider and quilt which means I have a favorite feature for each type of creative project! For sewing, the FHS is the favorite feature. For embroidery, it's the even, consistent stitches. For quilting, it's the stitch regulator. For all three, the needle down is fabulous!
FHS. I wish my stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer had this, too!
I discovered I need FHS. I am in the process of getting new sewing machine and the FHS was most important factor for ordering Bernina, instead of other option. Numerous times in past I've been wishing that feature, not knowing it's already invented :-)
I love the FHS, and the needle up/needle down features, but the feature I love most is the automatic buttonhole foot. Before my Bernina, I never could sew buttonholes very well, but with this foot, I can make every buttonhole on a garment to be the exact same size without any trouble. And I also love the way to measure the button on my 630's screen. Love, Love, Love it!
My favorite feature on my Bernina 640 is the 9mm stitching. It gives me sooooo many more beautiful options for crazy quilting & applique.
The screen is big & easy to read.
And this might sound crazy, but I have owned several other big name brand (& expensive) sewing machines ... but I LOVE the sound of my Bernina! It purrs with creativity & all I have to do is steer. :)
My favorite feature would have to be the needle down and being able to raise or lower it with the foot pedal.
FHS and automatic buttonholer. I sew, embroider and quilt and can't do0 without either one.
Adjustable dual feed on the 830 HANDS DOWN!!! The absolute bees kness!
For me, it's a combination of two features that I find indispensable. The FHS to lift my presser foot and the needle down feature work in beautiful harmony to help me with precision sewing.
I have owned several Berninas and cannot imagine sewing on anything else! The ease of changing feet to the FHS and now the stitch regulator. Mostly it is the consistent way the machine operates. Like old faithful, you can always count on your Bernina!
I just love my Bernina 830. I think of it as an investment and it has given me many years of sewing. Mine is the "old" 830 but I love it still although the new ones seem to perform miracles and I just wish that I could afford right now the new 830 with computer etc.
I love the needle down feature!
I have the 140 model and I love the flowers I can make on the edge of fun projects.
My girlfriend has the 820 and all I can say....is they are ALL favorite features. I sure wich I had a BSR....that is one DREAM MACHINE :)
Smiles,
Kelly
Sews when I want to sew. It is always ready when I am.
My favorite feature on my 730 is the cutter. Makes me smile every time I use it. Also couldn't live without the auto threader. My "other" machine had better lighting and that is something I wish it had, which is one of the reasons that 830 is tapping me on the shoulder.
The FHS and automatic threader.
While there are so many features on a Bernina to love, the FHS is the one I would hate to live without! I occasionaly sew on a machine without it and can barely manage :)
Dianne
I have the 830 and absolutely love it!!! Bernina has built so many wonderful features into this machine it is very difficult to pick just one. The free hand system is absolutely wonderful but so is the ability to drag and drop stitches. I also absolutely love the automatic cutting of jump stitches in embroidery. What a wonderful machine!!!
My mother always told me to have the best sewing machine. She planned money for me when she passed away. To her heavenly pleasure I purchased my 1st Bernina a 830 this year. What isn't my favorite item on the machine~!
The threading~!
The needle up and down~!
The room under the foot~!
The bobbin winding~!
I have only learned a tiny, tiny bit with this machine but love love it and it's stitches.
PS.... Now I am off to quilting class.
My favorite feature is the needle up and needle down option. It makes machine quilting so much easier. I would like a sensor that would tell you what size needle is in your machine. Sometimes it's really hard to see the number on the needle without a magnifying glass.
I own a 730e and love the FHS but my favorite feature is the ability to change embroidery designs to any size, not just a 10 or 20% change. I use this feature a lot. It saves me a lot of time because I don't have to run to the computer to make the changes I need.
I really like the conveniance of the Free Hand System. It makes working in tight spaces great.
I have an old 1230 and a 730E; on both of these machines the two items I utilize EVERY TIME I sew are the needle down and the knee lift system. Oh, yes, the ability to raise the needle with just a slight motion of my heel on the foot pedal is another bonus that I use all the time. There are just so many wonderful things about my Berninas that I love--the consistent stitches, the ability to sew delicate fabrics or denims with the just change of a needle, the ease of cleaning, and the common-sense way each and every thing operates on the machines.
Do I see an 830 in my future? You bet!!
There are so many neat features it is very hard to pinpoint just one. I do think the threading of the needle has got to be my favorite and the fact that it really works. I have very little use of my left hand from a childhood disease. The other threading systems on the Bernina's I have owned were impossible for me to thread so I vote the THREADING #1 in my book.
Although it is not on any of my Berninas, I would like to see it on my next one - that is; a laser beam that shines down on my project, showing me EXACTLY where my needle will go in. I need this particularly when embroidering on leather or vinyl, where it is crucial that you get it right the very first time!
I love my 240, 730 and my wonderful new 830, and I'm addicted to the FHS, pattern begin and end, the wonderful lighting. My favorite new features on the 830 are the Bernina Dual Feed and also being able to so easily send sewing stitches to embroidery.
My WANT is to have at least one "undo" availble so that I can reverse a mistake in setting up combi-mode or designs.
Some accessories that I would buy in a minute would be a #10 foot with a clear sole, a medium, large and mega hoop with the same closing system as the jumbo hoop.
The free hand system is one of the best. However I do Love Love Love my BSR also.
Solidness of the Machine, the needle down position, variety of stitch patterns, the variety of feet and their uses, needle threader, and so on. I purchased a QE Virtuosa 153 Bernina sewing machine at age 60, then I learned to sew my first quilt, and 10 years later, this Bernina sewing machine has given me a new lease on life. Absolutely, love it!
It's hard to pick just one favorite thing! I love my Bernina 440QE and even my older basic 1001. It's a tie between the FHS, or the "knee lifter" as I think of it and the needle down function. They're just awesome machines, all the way around.
My Bernina just loves me! Every time I start my project it remembers every setting I have used during my sewing time.
LOve the needle down, especially for quilt piecing. Overall I guess my hands free for pressure foot. Love to embroider on my 730.
I drive a 730. I love the knee lift for the presser foot - it's like an extra hand! And needle down, thread secure, auto threader and auto cutter. But my dream feature would be a machine that took a spool of thread both below and above (instead of a bobbin). Wouldn't that be cool?
I love the new dual feed system on my 820! A close second is the large bobbins.
I love the clock on my 830! I get started and just can't stop, so the alarm is wonderful. The job specific feet make sewing so much easier and more successful. This is my third Bernina, so I am used to the FHS, needle down, and lots of other features, but the CLOCK is awesome!
I would pay thousands, (and did!) for the automatic scissors....LOVE THESE's! Also the FHS, screen on the front of the machine, ease in putting on the many pressure feet, and of course that fabulous BSR!!!!!
My all time favorite is the FHS! But the needle up/down runs a close second, and the HUGE sewing surface table for the 830 is fantastic! And it stays on while using the embroidery unit, making it more stable under the embroidery!
I have the new 830, my favorite feature is the "hover" feature, where the foot can be raised just a bit to adjust the fabric underneath.....but everything about the 830 is my favorite, I love that machine!
I absolutely love the auto cutting feature of the 640 and the 830. When I bought the 640, I thought hard about whether to pay the extra for not having to clip the thread each time, and I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! An absolute timesaver.
It is very difficult to pick a favorite. I love my machines so much I stay up late at night and wake up early just to spend much quality time with them. I love the BSR, and the dual feed, the FHS and many others. However, my absolute favorite feature is being able to switch my 830 off in the middle of an embroidery stitch out, go to sleep and when I turn it on next morning, it goes exactly where I left off. Now that's a WOW!! What a great MACHINE!! Thank you Bernina!
Lots of things that I love about all my Berninas but what I love the most is the needle up/needle down feature.
My favorite feature isn't unique to my 430....it's the ability to move the needle to left or right of center. May seem like an "oldie" to many sewers, but it has improved my accuracy and makes me look like a much better sewer!
Still have the 930 (workhorse), the 200 upgraded to 730 for BSR, and the 830. I love all my machines! Love the FHS, BSR, Hover, large emb hoop, memory of past stitches, quality of all stitches, in fact, everything Bernina!!!
I am hard pressed to select just one favorite! This 830 is my first Bernina and I love the ease of activating the dual feed system! Another close first is the threading system.
I love my Berniina's!!! My favorate feture is nedd;e3 down.
Yiepy yeah, do I love that "Dual feed" feature on my new 830 Bernina with the wonderful variety of dual feed feet! I am in love.
I can't live without the presser foot lift. I had to build one into my old other brand machine.
I am moving up in the world going from a Kenmore 12 stitch to a Bernina 730E is worlds apart from each other, I just I Bernina every feature on it is a a special feature to me. I am like a kid in a candy store with so limites
I love my entire machine! I purchased it during a promotion and paid for it over several years. I continue to learn all the things it can do thru reading many blogs and info on this site. My machine is my baby and I treat it with TLC.
I love the knee lift and also the needle down.
The needle threader is the best. After I got the hang of it, I wonder how I would sew without it. Eyes are just not what they use to be.
:)
I LOVE my Bernina 210 and my very most favorite feature is the Needle UP/DOWN feature! Thanks for sharing, love,Linda
jldouglas@wispwest.net
Love the FHS and the needle down feature. Also love all the feet!!!
From the old 830 to the new 830, what a difference! I recently visited my daughter and sewed on her old 830 she inherited from my Mom. It sure made me appreciate my 440 with the FHS System, the securing stitch, the reverse button, and the foot pedal that I can put up and down with just a touch of my heal. Way to go Bernina!
The knee lift is my favorite feature - I own a 180 and love it so much i added to my 125 after i purchased it to take to classes, small group sew days and retreats...
I love the knee lift aka FHS
i can't type well, as my right arm is in a cast. i love my decorative designs and the easy threading needle.
My favorite feature is the one that tells me the last 15 stitches that I have used. It makes sewing faster as I do not have to keep looking up the numbers of the stitches I just used!
I own a Bernina 730E my first machine after I retired from work. I bought this machine because it has the embroidering stitches. Alson the computer warns when something is wrong and the best feature is the tutorial in the computer. There is no need to get the book. Everything at my finger tips. Whenever I sit at my machine I feel very happy. Thank you Bernina.
My favorite feature is the bobbin minder -- lets me know when I'm out of bobbin, so I don't discover it AFTER I've stitched a long line of something.
Next favorite is the even feed on my 820.
It would be a tie between the needle up/down and the BSR. I have 3 Berninas...have purchased 2 others for my daughters and just love them!!!! I bought my first one 36 years ago and I still have it...along with a 170 and now a 730. Their dependability is awesome. Bernina rocks!!
My two favorite features have to be the FHS & the needle up/needle down. Can't live without them!
I LOVE everything about my Bernina 830. Cannot imagine sewing on another system: Free Hand system, Start button automatically lowers the presser foot and engages sewing, temporary altered memory, "drag and drop", importing sewing stitches into embroidery, automatic threading, automatic thread cutting, the wonderful thread delivery system, the lighted "runway", the large bed/arm, and the list could go on and on! Thank you, Bernina!
Picking a favorite feature about my beloved 830 is like asking me which child is my favorite! My first thought was the scissors - but wait, what about the FHS, or the needle down, or the wonderful feet? All the features combined make sewing fun instead of work. That's my favorite.
My favorite Bernina sewing machine feature is the variable stitch length. With the ease of pushing a button I can control the length of a single stitch when I am turning a corner or coming to the end of my sewing. How amazing is that?!
I love the bobbin warnings. The large bobbin is also a nice feature.
There's a particular "serpentine" stitch that I've only seen on Berninas. Never knew I needed it until I used it once...now it's the must have stitch and just one of the reasons I love my Bernina 830 Record.
I love my Bernina so much. I am new to sewing almost 2 years in May. Is that new.??? I love that I can pick so many different feet and change them so quickly without having to take 5 to 10 minutes to start the next part of a project. My foot of choice. My trust walking foot. When I started with my new machine I was always afraid of touching and pushing buttons. Not anymore!!!
I love the feet. The variety, the quality, the precision. This is one of the main reasons I made the move from Elna to Bernina, and am so happy I did!
My favorite feature would have to be the needle-down option. It is such a simple thing, but I use it all the time!
Temporaru altered memory. I was in a class at a quilt show and the classrrom machines were another brand (Viking.) I got so tired of having to re-set my straight stitch and satin stitch as we toggled between them in class constantly.
My activa 130 and I sew everyday and the one feature it has I can't live without is the freehand knee lift...
I love the Automatic Needle Threader. It became painfully evident how much I depended upon it when it broke. I just had to have it fixed right away. Once using this feature I don't think I would ever want to do without it.
I have a Bernina 220--my first new sewing machine since I was 16 (30 years ago!) I love the ease of everything about my Bernina as opposed to my old singer--especially the back stitch and the bobbin winder. And the walking foot makes quilting and sewing layers SO smooth and easy. I can't believe I waited so long to buy this machine!
Well, I may be the only one to comment that doesn't actually have a Bernina BUT I am picking up my new machine tomorrow and cannot wait!! My dream machine that I have been saving for for some time and I can tell you that the features that most impressed were the little ones that make sewing an ease. Effortless feet changing, needle down and the BSR which is going to bring my quilting up a notch. Bernina, here I come!
My favorite part of my Bernina is the amazingly great straight stitch on my 1010. I often bring my project out partway through just to show my husband how perfect the Bernina stitch is...he doesn't know what I'm talking about, but he admires it for me anyway. I bought this machine in the early 90s and it is my "go to" machine for everything from sewing smoothly and evenly through multiple layers of denim all the way to a perfect straight stitch on fine cottons. I love that the bobbin holds so much thread, I love the speed of the machine - I love my Bernina.
How do I pick my favorites?? I recently purchased my fifth Bernina in 30 years. Starting with my 830, 930, 1530, 165, and now my new 730E--all these machines have been solid workhorses. I have sewn layers of denim without any problems, but my machines have also done fine heirloom and smocked garments. I could not sew without the FHS! I also love the adjustable needle positions. They make precise stitching possible. How does Bernina keep making the best better??
The little lever that makes changing feet so quick & easy, and latches them in so secure.
I love a gazillion features, but the one I use every time is the needle down feature.
Needle down with the hover feature on the 830. Hands down. I didn't anticipate what a convenience it would be until I had it!
I have a very nice machine now but it is over 10 years old. It does not have a needle threader and I really, really am starting to need that feature! I'd also like an auto thread cutter. I'd like a serger foot that cut as well. I'd like my machine to show me what a stitch will look like after I change the length/width settings so I decide if that is what I want or if I need to adjust further.
Hi Christie - When you're ready to look for a new machine, take a look at the auroras and artistas. Both have screens that show you exactly how the stitch changes as you adjust length, width, mirror image, pattern extend - even what the stitch looks like when stitched with a Double Needle!
Meanwhile, if your current machine is a BERNINA, there is an overlock accessory that trims the fabric as you stitch - the Cut 'n' Sew For a short video demonstration, click here..Jo
Oh boy! the needle threader!
There are so many features I like. Choosing one is difficult. But overall, the FHS is invaluable. What I would like to see on the newer models is a way to have both a wide feed dog and a narrow feed dog. The narrower feed dog makes a better straight-stitch.
I love the needle up/down feature on my Bernina Virtuosa 160, also the 1/4 inch foot and the Walking foot. The enginering is excellent regarding removing and placing of different feet.Iam so glad I found this machine at a local dealer; when I only went in to have my vaccum cleaner repaired.
My favorite feature is the ECO button. I started sewing many years before computerized machines and could not adjust to having to turn off my 200E before pinning or ironing seams. This feature on the 830 saves me from having do this every few minutes when I am making garments or drapes.
The Bernina 830 machine itself is a wonder of precision and quality.
The new machines have so many features I wouldn't want to live without however when I take my little "class" machine out...I know I would miss the needle down feature lots.
I would say my favorite feature is the tension dial. Mostly I like it because I never need to adjust it. I have had machines that are tension temperamental in the extreme, but the Bernina I sew on just does whatever, whenever I need it.
From Leather to sheers it just does it all.
If I could only take one machine to a desert island with me, my Bernina would be my first choice. It never lets me down. I can count on it to do everything I ask. It is the MOST reliable machine I have ever owned and I have a lot of toys. I am a Bernina person for over 30 years and will be forever. I have owned over 5 Bernina in my life (I have three right now) and I cannot contemplate not having them to use. They make my sewing and creating a joy!!
I bought my Bernina 440QE in December of 2009 so I am new to this machine. Prior to that I used a 40 year old Kenmore and a 3year old Costco Brother. Having not sewn for a number of years, I am loving getting back into it. I love the needle down position but wish it was just automatic with everything I sew. I also love the needle positions. I wish my machine came with a set of tutorials on cd to explore each function: stitch length/width, examples; zipper, bobbin winding and thread loading; zig zag, applique, buttonhole stitches and other decorative stitches. I am a hands on learner. I took the all day class but think i need to take it again. I cd would allow me to review some of the things that were taught in the introductory class. Short simple tutorials would be a great help to me to get really comfortable with the machine. The quality of the machine is quite evident, the even stitches, the scoring on some of the feet, etc. I am very pleased with the little sewing i have done already. I look forward to exploring each function...
Did you know that you can set the needle to always stop in the down position? When you push and quickly release the needle up/down button, the needle moves down if it was up, or up if it was down. But if you hold the button in for a few seconds, the arrow next to the neecle graphic on the screen will point down, indicating that the needle will automatically sink down into the fabric when you stop sewing. It's one of my favorite features! Jo
I love the button hole maker.
Hi my name is Rhonda and I love all the features of my machine. I shopped around before I bought my Bernina 640 artista. None of the other machines could compare with the ease of sewing, but my favorite feature is the way is embroiderys. It is honestly my "dream machine" Yes I am in love with sewing again!
I really LOVE the knee lift. It makes piecing quilts fast and easy, and easing in arms on shirts couldn't be easier with this feature. I also love the new feature on the 8 series of hovering the foot before you start sewing.
I have the 640e - got it for my birthday last year, and have enjoyed sewing lots of different projects. My favorite part is the built-in embroidery alphabets, as I get lots of requests to personalize items for younger family members. It's quick to embroider names! Wish I could find my software CD to use some of my old designs I downloaded though - is there a way to download a replacement?
Hi Lori - Depending on where and how you purchased your lost designs, you might be able to get replacements. Send me an e-mail at joblogs@berninausa.com and I'll take a look for you. Jo
Sadly i do not own a machine of my own but the FHS sounds wonderful.
I have a long love affair with Bernina starting with the 930, however, I it traded in for the 150. I than purchased the 440QE, which is still a favorite of mine. The 150 was traded in for the 730. Now I own the incredible, fantastic 830. Wow, what a great machine. If I have to choose just one feature, the BSR is hands down my favorite. Once mastered, this wonderful foot enables me to quilt like a pro, well, almost like a pro, at least in my mind. No matter how much practice, old school free motion quilting was beyond my abilities. I could not master coordinating the movement of the fabric and the speed of the foot pedal to stitch proper quilting designs. The BSR is transforming. Without the BSR, I was just a piecer, now I call myself a quilter. I love the BSR.
So much to love about this. I think the built in walking foot/dual feet foot is Special
My machine is low tech, I do have a needle down feature that I like very much.
It's simple, but I love the ability to backstitch :)
I love the foot pedal, of course - it has to be the most important (time-saving) device on a sewing machine!
I learned to sew on a Bernia when I was seven, I have the use of only one arm. So the knee lift was my way of being able to do something the same as someone with the use of twwo hands.
The use of the needle down, the amount of needle positions is wonderful. The needle threader was another life saver, you can't imagine how many times I've practicle stand on my head to use other theaders. I love that you can sew and FILL a BOBBON at the same time, how wonderful. Especial for embroidery.
Well you may think I was lucky enough to own a Bernia, sadly I don't. But I was lucky enough to take some embroidery projects and classes at a local dealer, my machine was giving me problems and I was offered to use the 830. Oh if I was a Fairy God-Mother I would grant my own dreams.
Thank you again, to Scott and Jennifer, owners of the CSSEWING, for allowing me to try your beautiful machine. And thank your instructors for their patience of taking the extra step to help me, when needed.
Thanks Kathy
It has to be the dual feed! I can't imagine not having it. A funny story on me- I thought I broke my Bernina, because it suddenly stopped working- lights were on, but nobody was home so to speak. Nothing moved. Instant panic! I was in the groove on a project, of course, with a looming deadline.......hit the gas one more time...and realized I was using the FHS to make it go.....duh... In my defense, I learned to sew on a White Rotary from the 1940s with a knee pedal. It was the only machine I had for 15 years. How far I have come with my Bernina!
I have 2 Bernina Machines(Plus a serger)
I would have to say that I pretty much love all of the features of them all, but the one that I love the most is the ability to save stitches and lettering into memory.
My first sewing machine only had a straight stitch option--I had to buy an attachment with metal cams that moved the fabric so I could do buttonholes and some decorative stitches! My Bernina 730 is an awesome machine!! It does everything, but cook!! One of my favorite feautres of this machine is the ease of making perfect buttonholes. I used to hold my breath to make buttonholes--which sometimes ruined perfect garments!! My only wish would be for better Bernina tech assistance--none of my email requests for help has ever been answered.
my favorite feature is the amazing assortment of automatice stich designs.

My favorite feature is the needle up/down option. Cannot live without it. The lock stitch is one of my favorites.
My favorite feature is the built in walking foot/dual feet foot, it really makes sewing a breeze, thanks!
I'm lost without a Bernina foot pedal with heel tap needle down!
I just purchased a 730E and enjoy the needle down - especially being able to engage it in the foot control! It's my first Bernina and I love it!
My favorite feature is the knee-lift. Love having both my hands free!!
I would love a sewing machine that has the USB port and USB memory stick! That would be so neat!
For sure the needle threader is my favorite feature. so easy.
I was used to such an old machine that the automatic bobbin winder was awesome to me...I know, old school!
I wish mine had more features! I would love one that makes it easier to thread and of course one that I could use with a computer.
What my favorite sewing machine feature is: multiple stitches.
The FHS is my favorite feature. It makes sewing more convenient.
I love the quietness of Bernia.
THE STITCH REGULATOR is the best thing ever!!!!!!!!!!
Anything that keeps my hands free is great!
I love the automatic thread cutter on my updated 200E.I wish I had it on my 230
My favorite sewing machine feature is the needle threader.
I have to say that I like many of the features of the 830, but the best for me is the extended arm. I do a lot of machine quilting and I really appreciate the extra space.
My favorite feature on the 830 is the automatic needle treading feature! I love to use the embroidery module and the automatic needle threading feature is a huge time saver!
My favorite feature is the 1/2" long basting stitch on my old bernina.
My favorite feature on my machine is the pressure foot knee bar. LOVE it. It keeps my hands on my project without having to stop what I'm doing. Also are the additional feet such as the pintuck feet which allows me to do many decorative projects.
One of my favorite features of my 830 has to be the fantastic natural lighting! I also love the multiple spool holder when I use my mega hoop because this really saves time changing threads. I love it all!
