The New BERNINA 830 - It's Huge! and Really Fast!
July 28, 2008
By now you've all heard about the new BERNINA 830, which made its debut earlier this month at BERNINA University (Bernina of America's annual dealer convention) and made its first public appearance during the webcast on July 21. As you can see in the photo - it's huge! 40" from stem to stern, including the embroidery unit. And super speedy - 1100 stitches per minute - perfect for speed racers like me :) And embroidery is fast, too - up to 1000 stitches per minute!
If you've been a BERNINA fan for awhile you probably remember the original 830 - a cream-colored machine in a BERNINA-red case. Produced from 1971 to 1982, it was the most popular BERNINA ever, with over a million sold. Isn't it amazing how much sewing machines have changed in 30 years? Maybe it's not so surprising...just look at video games. Pong was released in 1972 - remember the little dot moving slowly across the TV screen? What a difference three decades of computer technology makes! The 830's namesake - the new Series 8 machine - still has all the great features of the original - excellent stitch quality, perfect buttonholes, a free-hand system for lifting the presser foot - plus much, much, more. For details see the Series 8 microsite at http://www.bernina8series.com/.
One of my favorite BERNINA features has always been the slide-on table - I love being able to use it as a really wide free-arm when stitching around pant legs and shirt hems. See in the photos how the slide-on table makes a continuous surface with the embroidery unit? Now I can use the slide-on table for "free-arm" embroidery - I'm not restricted to items that will fit around the arm. This is going to make it so much easier to embroider all those tubular items I usually have to unstitch, embroider, and reseam!
More on Series 8 later!

I would like to know if the new machine(830) will be able to embroider a 14x 14 area as a lot of the embroidered quilts are designed for that area? i LOVE MY Bernina and can only hope that it will be able to do that. How does it sew with metallic thread?
When will the quilting frame be available ?? It is to good to be true!!
Yes I do remember the "old" 830. It was not only my first Bernina, but my first good sewing machine. Before that I had been sewing on an old thrift shop black iron something. I paid for that first 830 by sewing patches on blue jeans for 25-50 cents each. At $500.00 that was a whole lot of patches. I lived in a small town that was undergoing a lot of construction and those construction workers were pretty hard on their denims. I sewed happily on Bernice for more than 30 years before upgrading to a 440qee a few years ago. I still have my 830, she sits in her case on a shelf in my sewing room as backup should I need it. She still sews well, as well as ever. I think I never would have replaced her if not for the BSR and embroidery feature. I love to sew on my 440 but ohhh my be still my heart that new 830 is sooooooooo wonderful. Do I need another machine?
does the 830 also have the art format in embroidery?
Hi Judy - The 830 includes Art Design Software, which can be used to use ART as well as other embroidery formats (I don't have any details about the software yet). If you already have embroidery collections you've used with aurora and artista embroidery modules, you'll be able to use those designs with the BERNINA 830 as well; and it has 2 USB ports!
I am Dell's Tech Fashion Blogger and PROUD Bernina owner. I LOVE the 830. You have done an exceptional job with this new machine. Kudos to the entire Bernina company on the success that will come with this new product and using the best of the best in technology to make it happen. I am already saving up to upgrade mine to a 830 and can't wait! :-)
Where can I read a report of all 830 features? For instance, can I use my 200 hoops, feet, embroidery cards. I've heard that it will cut threads as it embroiders??? Thanks for directing me more details. m
Hi Maryl - You can read all about the Series 8 machines at www.bernina8series.com. Click on Product Details > Top 8 Features, then scroll all the way down the screen where you'll find a line that reads "For a full list of BERNINA 830 features, click here." This will take you to a complete listing of all the features of the 830.
I have been sewing on Bernina, first the 730, then the 830, then the 930, which I still have!!!! I was a Home Ec teacher and Berninas were the sewing machines used in class. Bought an Artista 730 a few years ago and have had problems with overheating. How has Bernina addressed this problem (motor and fan) with the new 830? I already have a deposit for the 830, but have concerns RE: overheating.
Linda
I have ordered the 830. I now have a 200 which will be my travel machine. I looked at the Bernina Art design software that comes with it. I also have the V5 software, but this little program does all that I would need when away from home. It will read all formats of designs, allow adding lettering, insert designs, enlarge, move and rotate. Also has slow re-draw.
Good job Bernina!
I will put this program on my laptop so I won't have to risk loosing my $2000 dongle when away from home.
I am anxious to get the machine.
We just set up my new 830 in my sewing room, it's my third Bernina and I'm so excited to have an embroidery component! The Deco 500 I started with just didn't make my heart sing - I'm sure the neighbors will hear me now! My 153 is sitting on the sidelines, looking very small compared to the new 830, but I'm sure we will still find time together too.
Does anybody know if the 830 still uses the old knee thingie, or can the foot control lift the presser feet like the Viking machines?
I found the answer to my own question: No more knee control. Yippeeee! That was always the one thing I hated about my old Bernina.
