Why I Bought My 830!
June 5, 2009
Here's a note from one of our readers, Randi Thekan:
Here's why I bought my 830! I created each block using DesignerPlus software and Elly Sienkiewiez's Studio BERNINA Exclusive Embroidery Collection, Baltimore Elegance designs. I used the Jumbo hoop and cut the blocks down to 10 1/2" squares and the rest is history. Sooo... when asked the question "Why did we buy the 830, for embroidery or quilting?" I had to answer "Both!" I hope now you understand why. Enjoy!

Iam considering purchasing the 830 for my embroidery and more important for quilting. Do you have the longarm frame? I will be quilting for clients and would like to use this machine. I like the fact that it is more portalble and can do quilting either in the hoop or on the frame. The thing that I don't know is if it can compare with the regular longarms for finishing quilts.
Hi Krista - The 830 has an extended arm - 12 inches. BERNINA has a quilt frame designed especially for the 830, so you can use it just like you would a long arm machine. Jo
I would LOVE to have an 830, however, it's just too expensive! I sew almost every day and I'd love to explore with it with everything that I do. I do have a 730, which I love! Maybe someday, Bernina will offer the machine and table again with 5 year financing. In retrospect, I should have taken them up on the offer when it was first made! Oh well, time will tell. Until then, I'm gonna continue to create all of the beautiful things that my 730 is capable of.
Following up on Kristas question about quilting on the 830...I would like to see a quilt that has been quilted on the 830, bed size.
I am "in the mood" for a new machine, and would like to know the true expectations of the machine I will be purchasing. If there isn't enough space for a bed quilt, I would like to know up front so I know what I am getting and can accomodidate what I will be purchasing.
Hi Cheryl - I've done queen size quilts on a regular-size Bernina, and the 830 has several more inches of space under the head. It's 12" fron the side of the machine to the needle! The Jumbo hoop is great for quilting with embroidery - the big quilt you see in the ads was embroidered in the Jumbo hoop, then stippled with the Bernina Stitch Regulator. Check out the size when you visit your Bernina store - take a quilt with you when you look at the 830 and see how it fits into the machine. Jo
Any idea where i could get the Elly Sienkiewiez embrodery software? I cannot find it on your site and it is just beautiful!
Jan,
If you're asking about Ellie's Baltimore Elegance emb designs, you can purchse them from your Bernina dealer or have her/him order one for you. These aren't available from OESD, just Bernina.
I would like to no if the new 830 can be put on the long arm machine if so can it be computerized on the long arm I no thier a blue llght but can the computer work on the long arm frame
Hi Estelle - BERNINA made a special quilt frame to accommodate the 820 and 830. I haven't tried it with any other frame. Jo
I was one of the first 830 customers at my Bernina store, I was in the market for a replacement to my 153 - WOW did I hit the jackpot!!!!!!! I also had tried embroidery on one of the first Deco machines and always wanted more. It was a huge investment, but when I look at his shop - well, let's just say if one was counting, we'd be getting close to being even. I sew and embroider everyday - most of the day. My 830 is the best thing to happen to my sewing pleasure.
Having fallen in love with it at first sight, I purchase the new 830 just 6 weeks ago. I have experienced nothing but problems and it has been back in the vendor's workshop for over a week, returned to me yesterday in a worse state than when it was taken away! I have now demanded a refund or replacement. I believe that I have been unlucky enough to have bought a 'rogue' machine but would like to know if anyone else has had any problems.
Having purchased an 820 just a couple weeks ago, Jackie, I am like you, I fell in love with it, especially that added space in sewing throat. I quilt on an average of 3-4 hours a day but am somewhat disappointed given the bugs which need to be worked out. The BSR does not work and factory is sending a heavier spring. Local representatives are very nice/helpful and has assured me that things will be taken care of. I also need to ask why the foot-knee lever keeps falling out while quilting. But since I will be attending a gathering of 830 and 820 purchasers soon, perhaps that opportunity to talk with others face-toface will be helpful. I believe in Bernina and with four sewing machines sitting in my sewing center, I will rely on Bernina to make this new model work. Would love to hear from anyone with an 820. Thank you.
I picked up my new 830 and the quilting frame on Friday - spent the weekend putting it together. It is a Grace frame, one problem that I and my husband had - there are no really great instructions with the package about loading the 830 onto the frame once the frame is put together and then loading the quilt fabric onto the frame after the machine is put on.
I also received the leaders - they were really confusing to put onto the frame. Does Bernina have any better instructions on these subjects to download? I have looked and looked in the manual and on the video and there is nothing. The only references are the instructions that come with the frame and these are not wonderful. Thanks for any help you can give. I am on my way into my dealer to ask about 6 questions. Hopefully I can get a quilt on this week to finish.
